🩺 Gallbladder Dyskinesia: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment
Gallbladder dyskinesia is a functional disorder where the gallbladder has abnormal or impaired motility, meaning it does not contract and release bile effectively. This leads to biliary pain and digestive issues, even in the absence of gallstones or structural abnormalities. It occurs when the gallbladder fails to contract in response to hormonal signals, resulting in inadequate bile flow.
Causes include hormonal imbalances, neuromuscular dysfunction, inflammation, stress, or poor lifestyle. Risk factors: female gender, young adulthood, high-fat diet, psychological conditions, and hormonal changes.
Common symptoms: upper right abdominal pain (especially after fatty meals), nausea, vomiting, bloating, fat intolerance, and recurrent pain episodes. Diagnosis often includes ultrasound and a HIDA scan with CCK stimulation to evaluate gallbladder ejection fraction (EF). EF below 35% may indicate dyskinesia.
Treatment options: low-fat diet, small frequent meals, avoiding trigger foods, regular exercise. Surgery (cholecystectomy) may be recommended for persistent symptoms.
Most patients experience significant relief post-surgery. Some patients may improve with diet
