Mold-Aware Shower Design (Read This Before You Renovate)
To reduce mold risk in tiled showers:
• Seal grout: every 6–12 months
(Closer to 6 months for daily use or humid homes)
• Replace silicone caulk (corners & seams): every 1–2 years or at first signs of failure
• Regrout: typically 10–15 years, sooner if grout is cracked or deteriorating
Why shower benches & shampoo shelves are a problem:
• They create horizontal surfaces where water sits
• Multiple seams = more failure points
• Water penetrates grout and migrates behind tile and framing
• Benches and niches are one of the most common hidden mold sources in showers
• Mold growth often occurs inside the wall cavity, not where you can see it
Even when “properly installed,” benches and niches rely on perfect waterproofing—and once that system fails, mold can grow silently for years.
Mold-aware design principle:
Fewer seams. Fewer ledges. Faster drying.
Cleaning does not stop moisture intrusion.
Design + maintenance does.
