🌿 DBT Skill Spotlight – Week 4: Opposite Action

Emotions are powerful messengers — but sometimes, they can lead us to act in ways that don’t serve our long-term goals or align with our values.

The DBT skill Opposite Action helps us shift our behaviors when emotions don’t fit the facts or when acting on them would make things worse.

Use Opposite Action when your emotions do NOT fit the facts or when acting on your emotions is NOT effective.

💫 Step-by-step

1️⃣Identify and name the emotion.

2️⃣Check the facts. — Does this emotion fit the situation?

3️⃣Identify and describe your action urges. — What do you want to do right now because of this emotion?

4️⃣Ask Wise Mind: Is expressing or acting on this emotion effective in this situation?

If your emotion does not fit the facts or if acting on your emotion is not effective:

5️⃣ Identify opposite actions. — What would someone do who is calm, effective, and aligned with your values?

6️⃣ Act opposite — ALL THE WAY. — Don’t half-try; fully commit to the opposite behavior.

7️⃣ Repeat acting opposite. — Keep practicing until the emotion shifts.

When emotions feel bigger than the moment… it might be time to Check the Facts 💭✨

Our emotions are powerful messengers — but sometimes, they’re responding to thoughts, assumptions, or interpretations that might not match reality.

Examining our thoughts and checking the facts can help us change our emotions.

🕊️ This practice helps you respond from wisdom, not reactivity — finding balance between emotion and reason.

Remember: checking the facts isn’t about invalidating your feelings — it’s about grounding them in truth, so you can move forward with clarity and calm. 🌸

The bee breath stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system or "rest & digest," as it is frequently called. 🐝

Humming is especially helpful in calming the mind and through vibration it activates the vagus nerve which helps provide oxygen and blood to through the body.

Emotions aren’t the enemy—they’re messengers. This week we focus on understanding them so we can respond, not react.

Goals of Emotion Regulation:

🌿 Name & Understand – Helps us give emotions distance because we are not our emotions. "Name it to Tame it"

🌿 Increase Awareness & Control – Notice the wave as it rises and choose your response.

🌿 Decrease Unpleasant Emotions – Reduce intensity and frequency over time.

🌿 Build Your Emotional Bank Account – Strengthen resilience so you’re less vulnerable when stress hits.

💡 Practice: Pause, breathe, name the feeling (“I notice sadness” or “I feel anxious”). Then ask, “What is this emotion doing for me?”

🌿DBT Skill Spotlight: Wise Mind🌿

Emotion Regulation in DBT teaches us that feelings are real and manageable. At the heart of it is Wise Mind - the calm space where Reasonable Mind (logic) meets Emotion Mind (feelings).

✨In Wise Mind you:
- pause and breathe before reacting
- make choices that honor both facts and emotion
- see the wisdom within each person
- bring left brain & right brain together
- find the middle path

💡Try this: Before a tough decision or action, place your hand on your heart and breathe “wise” in and “mind” out. Focus your entire attention on the word “wise”, then focus it again entirely on the word “mind”. Continue until you sense that you have settled into Wise Mind.

Finding this balance isn’t about perfection, it’s about practice.💗
