Your tongue is made up of 8 different muscles working together to help you breathe, swallow, speak, and support your airway.

But like any muscle in the body, it can become weak, uncoordinated, or develop poor habits.

When the tongue isn’t functioning properly, it can contribute to:
-mouth breathing
-low tongue posture
-snoring
-poor sleep
-airway issues

That’s why myofunctional therapy focuses on training these muscles through targeted exercises to improve function and breathing patterns.

Small muscles.
Big impact on airway health.
👅 This is why exercises matter.

Dark circles under the eyes aren’t always cosmetic.

They’re often called allergic shiners — and can be a sign of chronic mouth breathing and airway obstruction.

When nasal breathing is blocked (allergies, enlarged tonsils/adenoids, congestion), blood can pool under the thin skin beneath the eyes — creating that dark, purplish look.

Botox treats the surface.
Airway therapy treats the cause.

If you or your child struggles with mouth breathing, snoring, or chronic congestion — it’s time to look deeper.

So why do I talk about the tongue so much?? The tongue is one of the most powerful muscle groups in the body — made up of 8 muscles that affect breathing, sleep, jaw development, swallowing, and posture.

When tongue function is off, the whole body compensates. That’s where myofunctional therapy comes in — we retrain the tongue and oral muscles to support proper airway and function.
A strong tongue = a strong foundation for the whole body.

Orofacial dysfunction doesn’t always look obvious—but it shows up in everyday life more than most people realize 👀

If you’re dealing with things like mouth breathing, poor sleep, chronic tension, or posture issues, the root cause may be how your tongue, lips, and facial muscles are functioning.

Orofacial dysfunction affects how we breathe, swallow, speak, and even hold our head and neck. When these patterns are off, the body adapts… and symptoms start stacking up.

The good news? These patterns can be identified and retrained with myofunctional therapy—at any age.

Your tongue plays a major role in breathing, swallowing, and airway development — but many people don’t know how to properly activate it.

This exercise helps:
✔️ Strengthen the tongue tip
✔️ Train proper tongue-to-palate posture
✔️ Support nasal breathing
✔️ Reduce mouth breathing patterns

The rubber band provides gentle resistance and sensory feedback so the tongue learns where it should rest — up on the palate, not down in the mouth.

✨ Consistency matters more than intensity.

Enlarged tonsils can be a serious airway issue, not just a throat concern.

Grade 3–4 tonsils can block most of the airway, often leading to chronic mouth breathing, low or forward tongue posture, snoring, and sleep-disordered breathing. These patterns don’t always resolve on their own—even after tonsil removal.

Myofunctional therapy helps retrain breathing, tongue posture, and oral muscle function before and/or after surgery, supporting long-term airway health and reducing relapse of dysfunctional breathing patterns.

If you or your child has enlarged tonsils, mouth breathing, or sleep concerns, a myofunctional consultation can help determine next steps—often alongside an ENT.

Worn teeth aren’t just a dental issue — they’re often a functional warning sign. Flattened, chipped, or shortened teeth can indicate excessive, non-functional muscle activity in the mouth and jaw. In myofunctional therapy, this type of wear is viewed as a sign that the tongue, lips, jaw, and airway may not be working together efficiently.

When these patterns continue, teeth absorb forces they were never meant to handle — leading to ongoing damage even after dental treatment.

Myofunctional therapy addresses the root cause, not just the symptoms. By retraining tongue posture, breathing, and swallowing patterns, therapy helps reduce excessive pressure on teeth, support jaw function, and protect long-term oral health — often alongside dental care.

If you’ve noticed worn teeth, jaw tension, or clenching, a myofunctional consultation can help identify what’s driving the wear and determine the next best steps.

A narrow or high-arched palate is a common structural sign seen with orofacial myofunctional disorders.

When the tongue rests low instead of gently against the palate, it can’t provide the natural pressure needed to guide proper upper jaw development. Mouth breathing, airway restriction, and certain oral habits can all contribute.

Over time, a narrow palate may be associated with:
•Crowded teeth or crossbites
•Speech challenges
•Sleep-disordered breathing
This is why function matters—especially tongue posture and breathing.
