🎃👻 Happy Halloween from Play Move Grow! 👻🎃

We know Halloween can be exciting and overwhelming for some kids. Here are a few sensory-friendly tips to help your child enjoy the fun in a way that fits their needs.

✨ Sensory-Friendly Halloween Tips:
🧡 Try on costumes ahead of time to check for itchy fabrics or tags. Soft pajamas or familiar clothing can make great costumes too!
💜 Offer noise-cancelling headphones or a quiet space if sounds or crowds feel overwhelming.
💚 Practice the trick-or-treat routine at home so your child knows what to expect.
🖤 Bring along a favorite fidget or comfort item for regulation on the go.
🧡 Remember—it’s okay to skip certain activities or celebrate in your own way! Passing out candy, hosting a mini party at home, or doing a Halloween craft can all be fun alternatives.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗟𝗢𝗣𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗟 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗖𝗘𝗦𝗦:
The “D” describes development from the perspective of the individual, where they are, and where they are headed. Understanding the unique developmental process means allowing space for each person to be respected and guided in their own personal developmental journey.

𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗗𝗨𝗔𝗟-𝗗𝗜𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗦:
The "I" describes the unique ways in which each person takes in, regulates, responds to, and comprehends the world around them. Unique to every human. Includes sensory processing, motor planning, an individual’s preferences, and more!

𝗛𝗨𝗠𝗔𝗡 𝗥𝗘𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗣𝗦:
The “R” describes how relationships fuel our development. Humans are social beings and relationships are a key to our development. DIR harnesses the key affective (emotional) aspect of these relationships to promote development.

DIRFloortime is a developmental relationship-focused intervention that supports caregivers in attuning to the unique needs of their child. At Play Move Grow Occupational Therapy, the DIRFloortime is embedded in our practice. We use your child’s interests to build a trusting relationship, adapting our approach to meet their needs in the moment.

As New Yorkers, we support Bill A7913/S5393, which seeks to amend the current insurance law in New York by expanding treatment options for autistic children to include DIRFloortime. Currently, only Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) is covered by insurance in New York. If you live in New York and support expanding insurance coverage to provide families with more options, please click the link in our bio or scan the QR code to sign a letter to show legislators your support for this bill.
