Overthinking is a control mechanism.
It creates the illusion of control — the sense that if you think hard enough, you can prevent uncertainty.
When the nervous system senses threat — not danger, but unpredictability — the mind accelerates. It scans. It anticipates. It prepares.
That preparation feels like progress.
But eliminating uncertainty is not the same as increasing tolerance for it.
At some point, more thinking is just avoidance…a way to stay in analysis instead of feeling.
Control reduces anxiety temporarily.
Tolerance reduces it long term.
