Bella made the trip to Equine Clinic yesterday for a lameness evaluation, as we’ve noticed some physical changes as she’s getting older (she’s 20 this year!).
Bella is a valued member of our herd, carrying some of our most vulnerable riders. She tolerates sidewalkers, our lift, toys—you name it. We’ve talked before about why older horses are such a good fit for our program, and she’s a great example of that. Part of that deal is maintenance. You get the experience, the steadiness, the “been there, done that”… but it also means a more consistent level of care and expense to keep them feeling good and able to do their jobs.
This is what that actually looks like in real numbers:
A farm call + exam runs about $200–$300, diagnostics like x-rays, bloodwork and ultrasound add another $400–$600+, and if a horse needs ongoing maintenance (like joint injections, medications or similar), that can be another $500–$1,000 or more annually depending on what’s needed.
Our horses rely on supporters like you to help us provide the level of veterinary care and maintenance they deserve.
