KeepItSacred.org The National Native Network is a community of AI/AN partners working on cancer and commercial tobacco

We are a national network of Tribes, tribal organizations and health programs working to decrease commercial tobacco use and cancer health disparities among American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) across the U.S. We offer technical assistance, culturally relevant resources, and a place to share up-to-date information and lessons learned, as part of a community of tribal and tribal-serving public health programs. We strive to decrease cancer-related health disparities among AI/AN communities and promote the roles of traditional tobacco and other traditional medicines and ways of living, improving public health while protecting tribal sovereignty and resiliency. The strength of our Network lays in partnerships between Tribes and tribal, national, state, and local organizations across Indian Country. The Network is intimately connected to the communities we serve and brings a wealth of knowledge of culturally based approaches for commercial tobacco and cancer prevention and control. The National Native Network is jointly funded by the Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) and Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC) under Cooperative Agreement # 1U58DP004979-01. The Network is administered by the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan and directed by a board composed of four partner tribal organizations:
-California Rural Indian Health Board
-Great Plains Tribal Chairmen’s Health Board
-Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium

🍂 The crisp fall weather is here, cozy sweaters, warm drinks, and colorful leaves all around! As we enjoy the change of season, let’s also remember to take care of our health.

Menthol ci******es and other flavored to***co products may feel “cooling,” but they make it easier to start smoking and harder to quit. 🚭

This season, choose fresh air over menthol. Breathe in the fall, not to***co. 💨🍁

🎃🍂 Don’t Let Commercial To***co Haunt Your Health! 🍂👻
🪶 October To***co Awareness Message for Our Native Communities

This Halloween season, let’s remember:
Commercial to***co is the real villain — and it doesn’t belong in our story.

🚫 Unlike traditional to***co, which is sacred and used with respect in many Native cultures, commercial to***co is harmful, addictive, and designed to hook us — especially our youth.

💔 In our communities, commercial to***co use is linked to:

Higher rates of cancer and heart disease

Breathing problems and asthma

Increased risk of diabetes complications

👣 Let’s choose a different path.
Honor the old ways — where to***co was respected, not marketed. Where breath was strong, and ceremonies were smoke-free unless gifted by tradition.

🎯 This October:

Host a smoke-free Halloween event for youth

Talk to your family about the difference between traditional and commercial to***co

Help someone you love to take the first step towards quitting — it’s never too late

📞 You are not alone. Call the American Indian Commercial To***co Program at 1-855-372-0037.

For culturally tailored quit coaching from to***co and e-ci******es, text SACREDBREATH to 88709.

For online resources and more information use this link: Keep It Sacred | National Native Network

🍂 Take care of your lungs, your spirit, and your future.
Don’t let commercial to***co steal your breath.

🌿 Honor Our Breath. Protect Our Future. 🪶

In our traditions, the breath is sacred — it connects us to the Creator, to our ancestors, and to all living things.

Va**ng threatens that sacred balance.

As Native people, we carry the wisdom of generations. Let’s choose to protect our lungs, our health, and our future generations.

🚫 Va**ng is not our tradition.
🌬️ Clean air, ceremony, and community are.

Let’s uplift our youth with culture, not clouds.

🚭 Respect Our Traditions. Protect Our Health. 🌿
This August, Let’s Talk About Commercial To***co.

At Inter-Tribal Council, we honor the sacred use of traditional to***co in ceremony, prayer, and offering. But commercial to***co is a different story! It’s harmful, addictive, and has taken too many of our relatives too soon.

As Native people, we carry the strength of generations. Breaking free from commercial to***co is a way to protect our lungs, our hearts, and our children’s future.

According to the CDC, E-cigarette aerosol is NOT harmless “water vapor.” It can contain harmful and potentially harmful substances, including:

❗Nicotine, a highly addictive chemical that can harm adolescent brain development

❗Cancer-causing chemicals

❗Heavy metals such as nickel, tin, and lead

❗Tiny particles that can be inhaled deep into the lungs

❗Volatile organic compounds

❗Flavorings such as diacetyl, a chemical linked to a serious lung disease. Some flavorings used in e-ci******es may be safe to eat but not to inhale because the lungs process substances differently than the gut.

It is difficult to know which substances e-ci******es contain. Text SACREDBREATH to 88709 for free help.

🌿 Understanding the Difference: Traditional or Sacred To***co vs. Commercial To***co 🌿

Did you know that not all to***co is the same? In Annishinaabe culture, sacred or traditional to***co is used for spiritual ceremonies, prayers, and offerings. It carries deep cultural and ceremonial significance, symbolizing connection to the Creator.

On the other hand, commercial to***co is mass-produced, chemically processed, and linked to addiction and health risks. Unlike sacred or traditional to***co, it is not used in traditional spiritual practices and has been widely marketed in ways that have negatively impacted Indigenous communities.
