Anthony Joseph Biasi

Anthony “Tony” Joseph Biasi passed away peacefully at Big Meadows Nursing Home on November 4, 2025. Tony was born March 20, 1939 to Joseph and Florence (Sigafus) Biasi, in Savanna, IL.

In his early years, Tony loved exploring the area that is currently the State Park, with his brothers Dick, Larry and Tom, and many cousins and family friends. He spent his entire life living and working in Savanna. He worked at the Indian Head Supper Club, the City of Savanna as a trash hauler, and he worked maintenance at Mest Manor. He never shied away from hard work and he was very proud of the work he did.

Tony was a unique individual who was surrounded by people that wanted to help him succeed. And for that reason, the family is grateful for the time, patience, willingness and opportunities that so many residents of Savanna offered to Tony. While Tony led a simple life, he loved smoking his pipe and spending time watching the river at Marquette Park and was a long-time member of the Moose Lodge.

Tony is survived by his brother Tom (Linda) Biasi of Florida, his sister-in-law Martha Biasi of Savanna and 6 nephews and nieces and their families. He is proceeded in death by his mother Florence, his brothers Richard (Dick) and Larry Biasi.

A graveside service will be held Friday, November 7, at 11 a.m. at Savanna Township Cemetery. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to Savanna’s Moose Lodge, the staff at Mest Manor, the staff at Big Meadows, and to FHN Hospice. Tony was very blessed to be part of an incredible community. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Savanna Moose Lodge, in Tony’s memory.

Celebrating Clinton’s Hidden History

Today I had the pleasure of meeting with Matt Parbs, Vice President of Grow Clinton and author of Hidden History of Clinton, Iowa. Matt kindly signed a copy of his book for me, and we enjoyed a great conversation about the people and events that shaped this community.

His book is a wonderful read — full of short, engaging chapters that bring Clinton’s past to life one story at a time.

At Law Jones Funeral Home, we believe remembering our past helps us stay connected to what matters most — our families, our neighbors, and our shared story.

And don’t forget: we’re still collecting historical photos and stories from everyone who wants to share a bit of their history!

Douglas J. Wierema, age 82, of Woodbine, Illinois, passed away Sunday, October 26, 2025, at FHN Hospital in Freeport, Illinois.

On January 13, 1963, Doug married the love of his life, Donna K. Randecker. Together, they celebrated 62 wonderful years of marriage and raised two children, Kevin and Darci.

In his younger years, Doug worked as a barber in Elizabeth and Stockton before joining Kraft Foods. Doug’s interests extended beyond the outdoors—he operated a small gun shop and was a passionate fi****ms collector. He loved attending garage sales and antique shows, often searching for unique finds like pocket watches and clocks. His love of storytelling and good humor was well known, and many remember the friendly banter and tall tales shared between Doug and his great friend, Jerry Rillie.

Rebecca J. Dauphin

Rebecca J. Dauphin, 68, of Savanna, IL passed away Sunday, October 26, 2025 at home in the loving care of her family and Genesis Hospice.

Born on August 5th, 1957, in Savanna, IL to Barbara (Frank) and Julius Dauphin. Rebecca was the youngest of 5, earning her place as the baby of the family.

Early years were spent helping on the family farm and debating with her older siblings. Being elected Class President, organizational skills were her strong suit. Known as "the whip" to her classmates. She wrote in her yearbook, "I am not arguing with you. I am telling you."

Rebecca graduated from Mt. Carroll High School in 1975. From there, she attended Western Illinois University earning her degree in Political Science in 1978, with minors in English and History. She went to the University of Oklahoma before transferring and obtaining her Law Degree in 1981 from South Dakota State. She worked at the Illinois State Attorney General Office, before returning to help manage the family farm. The farm was always her home.

Rebecca was always well informed and happy to have a good political debate with anyone. Memories were made around the kitchen table, discussing politics and sports. She had a witty sense of humor.

An incredible baker, she was well known for her caramels, fudge and cookies at Christmastime. She learned her skills from her mother, Barbara. Together, they made a cookbook of all the family favorites. Complete with memories and notes with each recipe.

As a voracious reader, Rebecca was always seen with a book nearby. She could finish a good book in one sitting. Over the years, she became an incredible knitter. Everyone was gifted with sweaters, scarves, and other beautiful masterpieces. There was always a cat (or two) on her lap, snuggling during her reading or knitting time.

Gardening was a passion in the summertime. Between her flower and vegetable gardens, she had plenty to keep her busy. It wasn't unusual to see her wandering around the farm between the gardens, chicken coop and playing with the dogs.

Over the years, some of Rebecca's fondest memories were made travelling with her sister, Deborah, and their mother. She loved the history of the locations. New Orleans, San Antonio, San Francisco, Dauphin Island, lighthouses, cruises and so many more incredible locations. There was lots of laughter on these trips!

Rebecca was proceeded in death by both parents: Julius and Barbara Dauphin; siblings Robert Dauphin and Blanche Dauphin. She is survived by her sister; Deborah Franks of Birchwood, WI and brother; Jule (Joni) Dauphin of Mt Carroll, IL; nieces, nephews, and great-nieces/great-nephews.

A visitation will be held 11am – 1pm, Friday, October 31, 2025 at Law Jones Funeral Home in Savanna, followed by a private burial service at Daggert Cemetery, Mt. Carroll.

Ada Boyer, age 91, of Mt. Carroll, IL, passed away October 21, 2025, at Allure Nursing Home, in Mt. Carroll, IL. A memorial service will be held in her honor at Simply Free Church, 25460 Locust Rd., Lanark, IL on Saturday November 15, at 11:00 a.m. A memorial fund has been established.

Ada Boyer, born on May 11, 1934, in Pikeville, Kentucky, and raised in Rockford, IL, lived a life full of love, laughter, and adventure. At just 16 years old, Ada followed her heart to Arkansas, where she married Maynard Boyer in 1950. While an unconventional choice by today’s standards, it blossomed into a devoted marriage that lasted until Maynard’s passing in 2011.

Ada spent the first 16 years of their marriage as a homemaker, raising their four children. In 1976, she pursued her passion for helping others and earned her nursing credentials from vocational school. She went on to serve the community at Rockford Memorial Hospital for 18 years, where she formed lasting friendships with many of her colleagues.

A member of Simply Free Church from the church’s beginning, Ada’s faith was a guiding light throughout her life. She cherished her role as a mother and grandmother, never missing a school play, recital, or game. Her social spirit and infectious laugh made her a beloved presence wherever she went.

As her children grew and left the nest, Ada and Maynard embraced their love of travel, frequently visiting Mexico and Las Vegas, where Ada’s lucky streak always seemed to hit. Even in her final years at Allure, she remained gracious, respectful, and full of joy, bringing smiles to those around her. Her years in nursing engrained in her a great sense of respect for her doctors and nurses; respect that was returned to her in kind, by the attentive and wonderful staff at Allure. Pauline F. Paxton

Pauline Faye Paxton was born on January 9, 1929, in Charleston, IL to parents John “Willis” and Florence (Dunifer) Lashbrook. Pauline passed away on October 25, 2025, at Allure Nursing Home in Mt. Carroll, IL, surrounded by love from close family.

Pauline grew up in Charleston, IL. She worked for General Electric in Morrison, IL, and Atwoods in Mt.Carroll, IL. Pauline married Arlo Paxton on July 19, 1947 in Atkinson, IL. Together they had a son, James Paxton, and a daughter, Corine (Paxton) Charles. Her family grew over the years with grandkids, great-grandkids, and great-great-grandkids. Pauline and Arlo farmed in Stockton, IL. They decorated their house with an award-winning Christmas lights display and collected antique tractors.

Pauline was a crafter, baker, and teacher at heart. She sewed countless Halloween costumes, baked and decorated elaborate birthday cakes, and personalized anything she could paint. If the craft store didn’t have it, Pauline would make it herself. Pauline spent lots of time with her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids teaching them how to read, ace a spelling test, and create an impressive school project.

Always keeping busy, she spent hours putting together puzzles and working diligently through word search books. She was proud of her extensive collection of salt and pepper shakers, gathered from garage sales and gifted by family and friends.

She had a passion for decorating for the holidays. She adored Christmas lights, dancing Santas, and flying witches. As she moved from her home in Stockton to Allure Nursing Home in Mt. Carroll, this passion for decorating continued. She loved to show her friends her themed room full of seasonal décor. It made her light up.

She was spirited and caring. You always knew where you stood with Pauline. She was known for her eccentric license plate titled “Witch 35.” To those who knew her, this was a term of endearment. When Pauline set her mind to something, she made it happen.

To remember Pauline, decorate for the holidays, bake a cake for a family member, create something original, or put a witch hat on.

Pauline is survived by her son, James (Maria) Paxton, and her daughter, Corine (Lee) Charles; her grandkids, Terry (Christy) Charles, Trish (Jerry) Oppold, Lacey (James) Mason, and James A. Paxton; her great grandkids Brooke (Grant) Pierce, Kayla Paxton, David (Morgan) Craig, Olivia Charles, Aubrey Charles, Caroline Mason, and Eleanor Mason; and her fifth generation great-great-grandkids, Marshall and Jordan Pierce and Carter Dunfee. She is preceded in death by her husband, Arlo, parents, and nine siblings.

Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 30, at the Law Jones Funeral Home in Mt. Carroll. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29, at the funeral home, as well as one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

David Lee Simon

David Lee Simon, age 72, of Shannon, IL, passed away at Freeport Memorial Hospital on October 18, 2025. A prayer service will be held at St. Anthony’s in Hoven, SD at 7:00 pm on Thursday October 30th. Funeral services will be officiated by Father Joe Holthauser Friday October 31st at 11:00 am at St. Anthony’s in Hoven with burial to follow at Gettysburg’s Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Dave was born September 13, 1953, in Hoven, SD, the son of Henry and Clara (Wirtz) Simon. He attended St Anthony’s Grade School, graduating from Hoven High School with the class of 1971. In 1975 Dave earned an associate degree in nursing from Presentation College, followed by a bachelor's degree in electronics from the University of South Dakota, Springfield in 1983.

On June 20th, 1975, Dave married Lisa Lynette Hull, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gettysburg, SD. The couple would go on to have five children, Katie, Shawn, P.J., Haley, and Nick and they stayed by each-other’s side until Dave’s final breath. Dave worked as a registered nurse in numerous hospitals prior to becoming a long-term care administrator. He almost made a habit of helping redecorate many of the hospitals and nursing homes he and Lisa worked at in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, and Illinois. He put his heart into brightening up the spaces for the residents with some much-needed paint and of course his smile. In 2011 he and Lisa moved to Shannon, IL, when Dave accepted the position of Nursing Home Administrator at Allure (formerly Good Samaritan) of Mt. Carroll, where he worked until retirement. Afterward he worked part time in the self-checkout at Walmart in Freeport, where he always tried to make people smile.

He greeted the world with a grin and left it the same way, always ready with a joke. Some of his favorites were if one of his children were to say I'm hungry, he would respond with- “Hi hungry, I’m Dad,” “knock knock.” “Who’s there?” “Duane.” “Duane, who?” “Duane the tub I’m dwounding”, or his famous one-liner “If life was fair, I’d have a full head of hair and 10 fingers.” Missing two fingers never slowed his humor; he loved to tell people he’d lost them “wrestling a polar bear,” and he could make a room of strangers chuckle. If you knew Dave, then you probably knew of “Aunt Emily” who loved to visit and share her unique sense of humor. Dave especially enjoyed joking with waitresses by ordering “diet ice water with diet ice cubes and a rhinoceros steak with flamingo eggs” or when asked if they could get him anything else he’d respond with “Yes, someone else to pay the bill.” He also had a signature response for favors and small requests: “It’ll cost you a smile.” He collected those smiles like treasures and rarely left anyone without one.

Dave was a man of many passions and hobbies. In his youth he could often be found outside and getting into mischief with his friends. He was also a bit on an adrenaline ju**ie and enjoyed bull riding and parachuting. Airplanes and flying were lifelong loves, times when he felt most free, and muscle cars and sports always seemed to capture his attention. A devoted fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and an admirer of Katlyn Clark and the Indiana Fever, he also collected sports cards and loved swapping stories about players and games. He also had a lifelong love of the outdoors. He hunted, fished, hiked, target shot, and reloaded his own ammo with meticulous care. Gardening also fit right into his personality as it allowed him to see his loving care blossom in front of his eyes. He had quite the sweet tooth, especially for chocolate and cookies. He adored the Disney character Goofy and the laid-back vibe of Joe Cool. In his signature theatrical style, Dave owned a Santa suit and played Santa for family gatherings, company parties, and nursing homes, spreading cheer for all he could.

Faith was central to Dave’s life. He loved sharing Jesus with his family and wanted to make sure his children and grandchildren knew the Lord. Whenever he tucked his kids in for bed or told them goodbye, he always made sure to say “Jesus loves you, so do I.” He was actively involved in his church, where his kindness and humor were part of his ministry. He placed family above all else and was especially looking forward to moving back to South Dakota in the coming years to be closer to his grandchildren.

He was always trying to make others laugh, to brighten ordinary days with unexpected joy, and to leave people feeling loved. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 50 years, Lisa Simon; children, Katie (Jason) Miller, of Brookings, SD, Shawn (Christine) Simon, of Grand Forks, ND, P.J. Simon, of Brookings, SD, Haley Simon, of Freeport, and Nick Simon of Brookings, SD; six grandchildren, Luke, Kjerstin, and James Miller, and Summer, Allie, and Aubree Simon; brother, Jack (John) Simon, of Water Valley, MS; sisters, Marjean (Lee) Stotz, of Tolstoy, SD and Mary Jo Mueller, of Cashton, WI; and sister-in-law, Gale Simon.

David is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Clara; brothers, Joseph Simon (infant), Norman Simon, and Jim Simon; sisters, Janice (Duane) Rausch, Betty (Jerome) Hageman, Gina (Darwin) Keltgen; as well as two unborn children, and four unborn grandchildren, all of whom, he will meet in heaven.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Jett Foundation in Dave’s name. The Jett Foundation empowers families of children living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) to access resources, bridge gaps in care, and connect with others, especially through Camp Promise, a free summer camp for teens and adults with neuromuscular disorders.

Bernice "Marie" Brkljack

Bernice Marie Brkljack, age 98, of Savanna, IL, passed away in her home on October 18, 2025. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, October 25, at Savanna First Presbyterian Church. Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., prior to the service. Burial will follow at Savanna Spring Lake Cemetery.

Bernice was born March 18, 1927, in Savanna, the daughter of Clarence and Bernice (Clay) Johns. Since she shared the same name as her mother, she went by her middle name, Marie, which continued her entire life.

Born and raised in Savanna, Marie graduated with the Class of 1945 from Savanna High School. Though she had plans to pursue college, she selflessly chose to stay home to care for her ailing mother and younger siblings—a decision that reflected the deep compassion and devotion that defined her life.

During those early years, Marie balanced her work at Engels Jewelry with the care she provided to her mother and siblings. Her mother, though ever-thankful of Marie’s efforts, would often tell her that she hoped she could find a husband and experience the life she deserved. It wasn’t long before her mother’s untimely passing, an event that would forever shape Marie. For the first time she began to look outwardly, and stumbled upon her next chapter. On November 3, 1951, she married the love of her life, Stephen Brkljack. Together, they embarked on many adventures, traveling often in the early years of their marriage before settling down to raise a family. Their journey took them from Savanna, where Stephen worked at the Army Depot, to Dubuque, where he joined the railroad, and ultimately back to Savanna, the town they cherished most.

Marie was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church and an active participant in the Savanna Women’s Club, Girl Scouts, and the Illinois State Extension Homemakers. Her life was a testament to service and community.

She found joy in the simple pleasures—gardening both flowers and vegetables, puzzle books and word searches, refinishing furniture, and reading. Gardening was her sanctuary, a quiet retreat when she needed time to herself. Her cooking and baking were legendary, not just for their taste but for the love they carried. One humorous family favorite: her son-in-law’s long-held belief that her pie crusts were homemade, when in fact, they were store-bought.

Marie cherished Sunday drives, especially those that led to family visits. The Johns family reunions every August were a highlight, filled with laughter, stories, and togetherness. She had a rare gift: never speaking ill of others, always choosing to see the beauty in people and the world around her. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Marie is survived by her three children, LouAnn (Tom) Hoskins, of Bettendorf, IA, David (Kathy) Brkljack, of Fulton, IL, and Mary Kay (Steve) Maines, of Charlotte, NC; five grandchildren; and one great grandchild. She is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Bernice; her husband, Stephen; brother, Jason Johns; sisters, Joyce, Lois, Rene, Betty Jo, and Phillis; as well as numerous aunts and uncles.
