Addiction is a family disease and recovery is possible for all family members! Children who grow up in a home with parents who are addicted to drugs or alcohol are THREE times more likely to suffer physical, sexual and emotional abuse. The overall national average is (38.9%) of children removed from their homes and placed in out-of-home care had parental alcohol or other drug abuse as an identified condition for removal. Half of the children under age 1 (50.7%) and (36.1%) age 1 and older who were removed from their homes and placed in out-of-home care had parental alcohol or other drug abuse as an identified condition for removal. You are not alone.

You are not alone.

This day used to be agonizing for me. My biological dad chose not to be a part of my life. I never got to meet him. I found out he had passed away through a Google search when I was in my late 20s.

This day used to make me feel jealous, resentful, unbelievably sad, and so very unwanted. Now it's just day like any other for me, but I want to hold space for those of you that are feeling that pain today. Sending love to you.

*** For those of you who asked why I didn't include fathers who have passed away, I wanted to create a space for people who have/had complicated/painful relationships with their fathers. I feel like there are many other posts that honor the grief of having a father who has passed away or other types of father/child relationships***

Here in the US, Mother's Day is upon us. We're thinking of all the people for whom today particularly difficult. This Sunday in May seriously sucks for so many people and in more ways than I can list.

So many wounds in the world. So many ways to be wounded.

I wish these made-up holidays didn't come with so much extra grief. There is plenty to go around without these greeting card dates. For now, please know that however this Mother's Day affects you, we're all here in this together, holding onto each other, holding each other up.

Whatever your loss - mother-related or no - I hope this weekend gifts you with something that lets you feel held, if only for a moment.

How about you? Is this Mother's Day thing hard for you, or is it a non-issue? If it's not a sore point for you, how does the mother-related pain of others affect you?

Unhealed traumas such as intimate partner violence and childhood neglect or abuse sometimes manifests in relationships as people pleasing, fear of abandonment, attempting to fix and save others and putting your needs last. You may have lost sight of what you need and want or feel that you don't have a right to say No. Part of healing is learning to recognize and voice your wants and needs and giving yourself permission to say NO.

You may not be in an abusive environment anymore, but being a survivor of childhood abuse with unhealed wounds may still influence every area of your life. It can affect how you parent your children, your ability to trust others, your physical health, your ability to regulate your emotions and to control your impulses. But there is hope. Support and healing are available!
