Born to Be an OB Nurse—Spotlighting Michelle Caissie
Michelle Caissie has dedicated her 19-year nursing career to caring for mothers and babies, spending 17 years at the Women’s Center at Hardin Medical Center in Savannah, TN. From the beginning of her career, she knew her calling was women’s health. Michelle aims to be a steady, encouraging advocate for every woman in Labor & Delivery.
Michelle meets patients where they are. When a mom says, “I can’t do this,” Michelle responds, “You’re already doing it. You’ve got this.” Whether holding a hand, propping tired arms during a late-night feeding, or helping a new mom feel confident, Michelle ensures every patient feels supported and informed. Watching mothers care for their newborns fills her with love, and being their advocate is something she takes deeply to heart.
She also brings that same passion to improving care at our Women’s Center. Michelle values that HMC leads in best practices through the Tennessee Initiative for Perinatal Quality Care (TIPQC) and has been involved in projects such as Breastfeeding, OUD/OEN, Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Optimal Cord Clamping, Promotion of Safe Vaginal Delivery, and the recent TeamBirth designation, which she calls the best of all. She is especially proud that Hardin Medical Center is one of only six hospitals in Tennessee to earn the TeamBirth designation, a testament to the teamwork, communication, and commitment to safety shown daily at the Women’s Center.
Michelle always lights up the room she enters, even while wearing a mask. During the pandemic, a beautiful, masked Michelle gave hope to every mom delivering their sweet babies during such scary times. She smiles with her eyes, revealing her inner calm and kindness, which is just what new moms need.
You might also see Michelle teaching at the very popular HMC Prenatal classes, which have recently been reformatted to a more hands-on approach, with simulations and explanations of pregnancy, labor, delivery, and basic newborn care. Michelle invites anyone to come see how she helps deliver a ping pong ball from a balloon! “You’ll have to come and see what I’m talking about,” she added. This has been fun for me and has expanded my way to serve our community even more.
Michelle is the kind of nurse every mom hopes to have by her side. She is steady, knowledgeable, kind, and deeply invested in every family she serves. We are so grateful for the heart, skill, and compassion she brings to the Hardin Medical Center Women’s Center every single day.
