In addition to these core services, LIFE provides life-changing opportunities through other services such as its Students for LIFE program, its Home Modification Program and the Assistive Technology Outreach Center (ATOC.). The Students for LIFE Youth Program helps young people with disabilities each their full potential by providing support, information services, training and leadership opportunities. LIFE’s Home Modification Program offers individuals with physical disabilities the freedom to access their homes independently. And finally, LIFE’s Assistive Technology Outreach Center (ATOC) is dedicated to increasing access to and acquisition of assistive technology devices and services for individuals with disabilities living in SE Georgia. Freeze Warning: Stay Safe and Prepared

Temperatures are expected to drop sharply overnight, with lows below freezing. A Freeze Warning is in place from 9:00 PM tonight to 9:00 AM tomorrow.

A great way to prepare for the cold weather ahead is by practicing the 5 P’s p protect people, pets, plants, pipes, and practice fire safety.

Here are a few extra safety tips for people with disabilities and their households:

Check your heat sources: Make sure space heaters, furnaces, and generators are working safely—keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything flammable.

Protect your pipes: Let faucets drip and open cabinet doors under sinks to help prevent frozen pipes.

Charge essential devices: Power up mobility equipment, phones, and backup batteries in case of power outages.

Bundle up and layer: Dress warmly, even indoors, and use blankets or sleeping bags for added warmth.

Plan for assistance: If you rely on personal care or transportation services, confirm schedules and have a backup plan.

Stay informed: Follow local alerts for shelter or warming center information.

Let’s look out for each other - check on neighbors, stay indoors, stay dry, and stay warm!

This Week In The News: Accessibility Restored at the White House!

A federal judge has ordered the White House to once again provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters for all press briefings by the President and Press Secretary.

The court found that removing ASL access violated the 1973 Rehabilitation Act and the First and Fifth Amendments, reaffirming that Deaf Americans have the right to equal access to critical government information.

This ruling restores an important right previously upheld and recognizes that ASL and written English are distinct languages - captions alone don’t ensure equal access for many Deaf Americans.

It’s a crucial reaffirmation of accessibility and inclusion, thanks to the National Association of the Deaf - NAD for proving that advocacy is powerful and can make real change!

INFORMATION ON SNAP BENEFITS

Fact: SNAP benefits are SNAP benefits are 100% federally and congressionally funded, and DHS disburses the benefits to eligible households in Georgia. USDA has not received federal funds for November, thus they are unable to distribute for this month or any foreseeable months until the government shutdown ceases. When the government reopens, however, funds are set aside for SNAP. Other USDA programs are distributed on an annual or quarterly basis, whereas SNAP is distributed monthly to DHS.

Fact: They still are accepting applications for SNAP.

Fact: No one will receive termination letters at this time for SNAP, and no one will have to reapply for SNAP when it reopens.
