Last month, HMC added a new Urologist to our ever-changing lineup of treatment options. One of the most common reasons to see a Urologist is Stress Incontinence.

What is Stress incontinence (more precisely, stress urinary incontinence)? The involuntary leakage of urine when pressure is placed on the bladder.

What causes the “stress”?
It’s not emotional stress—it’s physical stress on the bladder, such as:
- Coughing
- Sneezing
- Laughing
- Exercising
- Lifting something heavy

Why does it happen?
Stress incontinence occurs when the pelvic floor muscles or the urinary sphincter are weakened and can’t keep the urethra closed when pressure increases in the abdomen.

Common reasons include:
- Pregnancy and childbirth
- Prostate surgery (in men)
- Aging
- Pelvic surgery
- Obesity
- Chronic coughing

Who gets it?
- More common in women, especially after childbirth or menopause
- Men can develop it, often after prostate surgery

How is it treated?
- Treatment depends on severity and may include:
- Pelvic floor (Kegel) exercises
- Physical therapy
- Lifestyle changes (weight loss, fluid management)
- Medications (limited role)
- Medical devices or surgery (like slings or sphincter implants)

We've been told that winter is one of the best times to schedule surgery...but why?

1) Winter, as cooler temperatures reduce swelling, decrease infection risks from sweating, and allow bulky clothing to hide bruising or bandages.

2) Easier Recovery: Cooler weather reduces inflammation and makes wearing compression garments more comfortable compared to hot, sweaty summer months.

3) Optimal Healing Conditions: Lower temperatures and reduced humidity create a better environment for healing incisions.

4) Scar Protection: Reduced sun exposure helps prevent scars from darkening or damaging skin..

5) Convenient Scheduling: The holiday season and winter breaks provide natural, pre-planned time off from work for rest, allowing for more privacy during the initial recovery phase.

6 )Comfortable Concealment: Heavy clothing, sweaters, and scarves make it easy to hide compression garments and surgical dressings.

7) Preparation for Summer: Getting surgery in winter ensures you are fully healed and ready to enjoy warmer weather with your final results by summer.

HMC Health and Rehabilitation Center offers exceptional long-term care for both men and women. The best part, if needed, our residents live just steps away from our Emergency Department. That makes a huge difference during a crisis.

But what exactly is "long-term" rehabilitation?

Long-term rehabilitation is extended, 24/7 care for individuals with chronic illnesses, severe injuries, or permanent disabilities requiring ongoing support (often 100+ days) rather than quick recovery. It focuses on maximizing quality of life, managing conditions like dementia or stroke, and providing assistance with daily living activities.

Have you ever wondered about the difference between Long-Term vs. Short-Term Rehabilitation? HMC offers both!

Short-Term Rehab: Focused on rehabilitation after a specific, acute event (e.g., hip replacement) with a goal of returning home.

Long-Term Rehab: Focuses on chronic, stable, but debilitating conditions where a return to independent living is unlikely.

Are you caring for a loved one who will eventually need long-term care? Call the office and let's schedule a tour! 731-926-8134 💙

A quick safety reminder as power restoration continues

We know this has been a long and exhausting week, and many of us were in the middle of everyday tasks when the power went out.

If you were cooking when the outage occurred, please take a moment to check that your oven and stovetop are fully turned off. When power is restored — especially if you’re away from home — appliances left on can begin heating again and create a fire risk.

It’s also a good idea to check other electric appliances, such as space heaters, curling irons and similar devices, to make sure they are turned off or unplugged before leaving home.

Thank you for taking a moment to do a quick check and for helping keep your home and community safe as restoration continues.

Feeling Impatient?

Here are 10 tips for promoting patience in ourselves and with others during times of uncertainty.

1. Mindful awareness of our impatient experience is the first step to patience. How do you feel impatience in your body? You might be experiencing headaches, tension, stomach distress, muscle aches, worsened chronic pain, increased blood pressure/heart rate, or sweaty palms.

2. Reflect on your personal triggers. What do you know sparks frustration and reactivity in you? How can you choose to respond differently?

3. Practice gentleness and compassion.

Everyone is under stress. Many work processes have changed. Consider that everyone is truly doing their best — including you.

4. Focus on what you can control. If possible, take some small action.

5. Focus on the good.

When feeling disillusioned about injustices, call to mind the good that is here now, including what you can be grateful for.

6. Pick an absorbing project and immerse yourself in it.

Some options include gardening, doing a jigsaw puzzle, cooking homemade meals, or even playing video games. The state of complete immersion in an optimally challenging activity — might be one of the best ways to combat worry during the uncertain waiting periods.

7. Regularly practice an activity that improves your body or mind. Examples include exercise, yoga, mindfulness exercises, or meditation.

8. Maintain hope. We will get through this.

9. Reconnect with your purpose. Cultivating a purpose bigger than ourselves.

10. Take a deep breath and repeat, repeat, repeat.

We're all in this together. We all want to help.
Let's pull together and make the best out of a tough situation.

Power is being restored all over our region.
But we may not be out of the woods yet.
Be aware of these situations.

Common mistakes when power returns include leaving sensitive electronics plugged in (causing damage from surge), overloading circuits by turning everything on at once, and ignoring flickering lights. Other errors are immediately opening freezers, touching downed wires, and repeatedly resetting breakers without fixing the underlying fault.

Key Mistakes to Avoid

Leaving Devices Plugged In: Power surges upon restoration can destroy computers, TVs, and appliances.

Overloading Circuits: Turning on all lights and appliances simultaneously can immediately trip breakers.

Ignoring Initial Flickering: While some blinking is normal as the grid stabilizes, ignoring constant flickering can hide issues.

Opening Freezers Immediately: A closed freezer keeps food safe for 48 hours; opening it wastes cold air.

Resetting Breakers Improperly: Repeatedly flipping a breaker without diagnosing a short circuit can cause more damage.

Assuming Safety: Always assume downed power lines are live.

Best Practices for Restoration

Unplug First: Unplug major appliances and sensitive electronics during the outage.

Stagger Power Usage: Turn on devices one by one once the power is stable.

Use Surge Protectors: Ensure sensitive equipment is connected to surge protectors.

Keep One Light On: Leave one light switch on to signal when power is restored.
