Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors

Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors Fox and Weeks will always be here when you need us In 1898 John H. Fox and his partner, brother-in-law James S. It was from the Huger estate that J.

One of the oldest and largest funeral homes in the state of Georgia, Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors began in 1882 when John H. Fox opened an undertaking establishment at 106 West Liberty Street, in what is now the Downtown Historic District. Weeks, moved their business to 112 West Liberty Street. They remained at that location for the next fifty-six years. The firm, having outgrown the facilities on Liberty Street, moved in 1953 to the Kayton-Grainger-Huger House at 700 Drayton Street. This beautiful brick and terra cotta structure, facing Forsyth Park, was built between 1887 and 1888 by the Lewis Kayton family. Elmo Weeks and his two sons, S. Elmo Weeks and Will D. Weeks, son and grandsons of the founder, purchased the property in 1953. In 1984 plans were begun to open a second location on the Southside of Savannah to accommodate the many people who had begun to migrate to that side of town. Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel, located at 7200 Hodgson Memorial Drive opened in 1986. In 1987 the Weeks family made the decision to sell their business to The Sentinel Group, a national funeral service acquisition company. That same year S. Weeks, Sr., the two brothers who had guided Fox & Weeks for the past forty years and brought it to the place of prominence and respect it holds within the industry today, retired. Elmo’s twin sons, Jim and Steve Weeks remained to manage the Savannah operations. In 1991, the Sentinel Group sold Fox & Weeks to Service Corporation International. Jim and Steve Weeks held various management positions with SCI and in February 1998, they opened Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel on Whitemarsh Island. In 2004 Jim and Steve decided to purchase their family’s business back from Service Corporation International. Since that time, Steve’s son, Scott Weeks and Jim’s son, Matt Weeks have joined the family business as the fifth generation of the weeks family to serve the people of Savannah. Their grandfather, S. Elmo Week, Sr., is still active in the business.

Fox & Weeks is privileged to serve the family and loved ones of Martha Louise Swain Foxx, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, who passed away peacefully at her home on March 10, 2026. She was born in Perry, Florida on April 8, 1944 to Alvis Edison “Dude” Swain and Thelma Land Swain. She was the middle of seven children. Marty spent her early years in Waycross, Georgia, where she graduated from Ware County High School. She spent her junior year in Warrenton, NC when her father worked on the Jordan Dam project in 1961. It was the first time she had ever seen mountains, and she fell in love with them, making many trips throughout her life to Valle Crucis and Asheville to enjoy the changing of the leaves.

Marty contracted polio at the age of six, just after starting first grade. She spent weeks in the Waycross Hospital undergoing treatments with hot woolen cloths wrapped around her arms. She was then transferred to the Aidmore Shriner’s Hospital in Atlanta, where she was kept flat on her back in bed for seven months with daily physical therapy. Her parents visited as often as they could, but the trip was a hardship. She didn’t remember being sad, as she had a wonderful nurse who gave her lots of special love and attention in a ward for eight children. Marty eventually regained the use of her left lower arm and hand, but her entire right arm and shoulders remained paralyzed. She had therapies and braces at Warm Springs and was able to return to school; she refused to let her disability define her life. Marty knew early on that she wanted to become a teacher. With the help of the Federal Program for Vocational Rehabilitation, she was able to go to college to become a teacher. She spent two years at Tift College and then graduated from Valdosta State College. She took a teaching position in Savannah right out of college and stayed there the rest of her life, falling in love with the historic city. Marty taught in the public school system for 30 years, specializing in 5th grade and science. She excelled at novel teaching methods such as cutting a trail through the woods and starting an organic garden next to her classroom. Marty loved sharing her own love of nature with her students. Fox & Weeks is privileged to serve the family and loved ones of William H. Friend, Jr., age 93, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 7, 2026. Born on January 1, 1933, Bill lived a long, full life marked by curiosity, creativity, and deep devotion to family.

Bill grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and graduated from the University of Cincinnati, where he was a proud member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. While attending the Institute of Paper Chemistry, he met a beautiful redhead named Debbie who would become the love of his life. Their romance had one small complication—Bill was 23 and Debbie was just 17. In order to receive Debbie’s father’s blessing, the couple agreed to spend a full year apart, communicating only through letters and phone calls. Their patience paid off. They married in 1959 and shared 61 wonderful years together before Debbie preceded him in death in 2020.
