Today is World Diabetes Day.

Over 38 million Americans have diabetes, or about 1 in every 10 people. More than 98 million adults (over 1 in 3) have prediabetes, and over 80% don't know they have it.

However, in many cases of type 2 diabetes, it can be prevented or delayed through healthy eating, activity, and regular check-ups.

✨ Member Spotlight: Union Mission ✨

Union Mission has supported Savannah’s homeless community for more than 85 years, providing emergency, transitional and permanent housing, as well as mental health counseling, food, clothing, transportation, and job placement services.

Homelessness often results from a combination of challenges such as income loss, health issues, and lack of support. Many Union Mission clients have also faced trauma, including violence, loss, injury, foster care, and unemployment.

In 2024, Union Mission served 1,334 individuals with 185,295 nights of housing and 262,866 meals, helping 773 men, women and children find their way from the streets of Savannah to safe, stable housing.

Since opening, our Day Center has welcomed 1,551 unique guests, with 48,447 visits and 112,942 additional meals served. In spring 2026, a new Resource Center will expand services to include laundry, showers, barber/salon, workforce development, and enrichment activities. To learn more about Union Mission and the programs and services offered to the homeless community visit www.unionmission.org.

Shout out to First Tee - Savannah for all the amazing work this grant will support!

September was National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month! In recognition of this, the Savannah Business Group Executive Committee, which is the board for Savannah Health Alliance, approved grant amounts to organizations making a difference in our community. Savannah Health Alliance (SHA) supports SBG in community programs, and several years ago, a grant was issued to SHA for childhood obesity. As part of this grant, First Tee-Savannah was awarded $4,000 to continue their mission of supporting local children and families.

First Tee-Savannah empowers young people by integrating golf with a life skills curriculum that builds character, self-confidence, and resilience. They reach students through after-school programs, PE classes, community partnerships, and free clinics offering physical activity in a fun, supportive setting. Through movement, structured play, coaching, and mentorship First Tee gives kids tools to stay active, make healthier choices, and develop habits that help prevent childhood obesity.

Congratulations to First Tee-Savannah! We’re excited to support their work as they help youth grow strong both in body and character!

We are proud to recognize The Willoughby Fund in honor of last month's National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month!

Savannah Business Group Executive Committee, which is the board for Savannah Health Alliance, approved grant amounts to organizations making a difference in our community. Savannah Health Alliance (SHA) supports SBG in community programs, and several years ago, a grant was issued to SHA for childhood obesity. As part of this grant, the Willoughby Fund, under the Candler Foundation, was awarded more than $4,000 to continue their mission of supporting local children and families.

The Willoughby Fund has been helping children in our community lead healthier lives for years. They focus on providing kids with opportunities to learn about nutrition, develop healthy habits, and stay active, all in a fun and supportive environment. By empowering children with knowledge and resources, the fund helps prevent childhood obesity and promotes lifelong wellness.

We’re excited to see the impact this grant will make and grateful for the Willoughby Fund’s dedication to helping our kids grow up healthy, happy, and strong!
