We can help prevent child abuse! Like cancer, child abuse can happen in families across socioeconomic status, race, faith, gender identity, ability/disability, mental health functioning, and sober vs. alcohol and drug using households.
The National Association of Social Workers suggest various actions we can compassionately take.
1) Provide parent education on parenting, childhood development, managing special needs.
2) Help families build social connections so they are less isolated. Some wounded families are isolated and do not have the support of biological extended family networks. Family can be created with others in the community so that there are others to turn to for support, comfort, and fun!
3) Connect families to resources and community support to help with financial stress, housing options, mental health services. Faith-based institutions, community sports programs, and after-school programs.
