Meet Phyllis, one of our many special Hospice of Southern Maine patients. At 102 years old, she shared stories with her hospice care team about her earlier days of being a competitive roller skater. Seeing how much she longed to feel that joy again, Phyllis' HSM team arranged a trip to Happy Wheels in Westbrook. There she was able to relive the happiness and freedom of being on the rink and she even took a couple laps with HSM Medical Director (and roller-skating pro!) Dr. Fernando Moreno. This is what hospice care means at Hospice of Southern Maine--a place filled with dignity, joy, connection, and love. Your support makes moments like Phyllis’ possible. Please consider contributing to our Fall Appeal to help us continue providing this kind of special care. Learn more and donate at: https://www.hospiceofsouthernmaine.org/fall-appeal-2025

November marks National Care at Home Month, and this week we celebrate Home Care Week. As our friends at Home Care & Hospice Alliance Of Maine wrote yesterday, caregivers, nurses, aides, and support teams deserve our deepest gratitude: “Thank you for the exceptional care you provide - at every visit, in every home.”

Happy Home Care Week!
This week, we celebrate the caregivers, nurses, aides, and support teams who bring compassion, dignity, and independence to families across our communities.
Thank you for the exceptional care you provide - at every visit, in every home.

We're a big fan of NPR's Unsung Hero series—short, powerful stories that celebrate the impact of human kindness. Here's a recent one about the profound effect a caring teacher can have on a student who is grieving. You can read or listen to this short episode here:

When Eric Schwartz was 15, his mother died. The first day back at school after the loss was difficult, but one teacher's kindness changed his experience of the day and the rest of his life.

Preble Street recently published a blog post highlighting the partnership between our two nonprofits and the shared commitment to ensuring that all hospice patients—regardless of financial status—receive compassionate, personalized end-of-life care. As Sara Cyr-Jordan, Director of Preble Street’s Supportive Housing Program at Logan Place, shared, “We are grateful for HSM and glad that they are connected to our community.” At Hospice of Southern Maine, we deeply value the work of Preble Street and are honored to collaborate in serving our community. November is COPD Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding of a disease that affects nearly 100,000 adults in Maine, according to the American Lung Association (ALA). In a short video produced by the ALA, Dr. Jons offers compassionate guidance on how to begin a conversation with a healthcare provider about hospice and palliative care options following a serious lung disease diagnosis.
