Even when it’s cold and snowy, the ocean is still teeming with microscopic life! 🪼 🌊
Earlier this month, we headed out to Casco Bay in Portland, Maine, to see what was happening beneath the surface. Using a 20 µm net tow, we ran our samples through FlowCam 8000 at 10X.
The immediate finding? A sea dominated by diatoms.
But then we noticed something interesting: f***l pellets. This was the “smoking gun” that something larger was nearby and hungry.
We swapped to the 2X objective to find the “predators.” Sure enough, we spotted beautiful copepods feasting on the diatoms.
To scale our search, we moved to FlowCam Macro to scan the rest of the sample at high speed. It’s a reminder that even in the coldest months, the biological pump is hard at work!
What are you seeing in your winter and early spring samples?
