❄️❄️❄️

In March of 2024, Annie and her family received news no one ever expects to hear. After months of back pain, a visit to the emergency room revealed the unimaginable—a tumor on her spine and spots on her lungs.

Within 30 minutes of her diagnosis, Maine Children’s Cancer Program (MCCP) team was by their side, helping them begin to process a new and overwhelming reality. The weeks that followed were filled with uncertainty, but Annie’s care team—Dr. Weiss, Liz Murray, and the incredible MCCP staff—walked closely with her family every step of the way.

Just two weeks after diagnosis, Annie began chemotherapy and settled into a routine of treatment at Maine Medical Center, surrounded by world-class care right here in Maine. When Annie needed specialized radiation at Mass General, MCCP coordinated her care seamlessly—supporting her family through eight weeks in Boston and again later in the fall when Annie returned for lung surgery.

On January 2, 2025, Annie rang the bell—marking the end of an intense chapter and the beginning of a new one. Today, more than a year later, Annie is healthy, managing maintenance treatment, and back to doing what she loves most… especially skiing at Pleasant Mountain. ⛷️❄️

Ski under the lights. Support kids like Annie. 💙

Our Story

The Maine Children’s Cancer Program (MCCP) provides integrated, comprehensive, clinical research based medical care and psychosocial and practical support to infants, children, and adolescents with cancer and blood disorders throughout the state of Maine and southern New Hampshire. With five pediatric hematology/oncology physicians, a team of specialized nurses, social workers, and research associates, MCCP strives to not only cure cancer in as many children as possible but also support families through their experience of living with childhood cancer. The Maine Children’s Cancer Program has a goal of helping to keep cancer from getting in the way of letting kids be kids! On our page, the purpose of our “Worthy Fact Wednesdays” is to provide you with weekly bits of information to educate yourself on childhood cancer and the facts behind the fight. The purpose of profiling our past patients, staff, and volunteers is to bring forward those involved in MCCP and their stories to introduce you to the faces behind the fight.
