For a long time I've wished more people understood what a serious issue SA is for massage therapists. I wish it didn't have to be like this. But, it is. And we all deserve to feel safe in our workplace. This is what I had to do. Happily welcoming new female clients and member of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Yes, I know that it is not just men who can be predatory. But in my experience it has only been cis, hetero men who have been inappropriate or assaulted me in my office. So this is the boundary that I NEED. I am allowed to make decisions in my practice that are ABOUT ME. They help me be a better person and bodyworker. In my opinion, the patriarchy and the entitlement that men are steeped in contributes to this problem. Sexual feelings are not wrong, they happen, even in a therapeutic environment. Acting on them is.

There is so much more to say about this issue. This is just the beginning.

What quote(s) or personal mantras help you get through a difficult day?

I’ll share one of my favorites. It helps me slow down which lets my brain (which tries to go too fast) catch up to my body. And when my brain and body are aligned I feel much more connected, well and empowered. Essentially, when our mind and body are aligned, this is the feeling of embodiment. 🥰

What does it mean to be a massage therapist?

It means holding a space for people to undress safely and without fear.

It means holding a space for people to allow their bodies to be touched.

It means being present while emotions arise and cultivating equanimity.

It means listening with your head, heart and hands.

It also means navigating a society where touch is often viewed as morally degenerative and s*xual.

Did you know that most massage therapists have experienced some kind of s*xual solicitation or assault while at work? This is because "massage" is still used as a euphemism for s*x work in many places, including in media.

Help massage therapists stay safe and make sure when people make jokes about "happy endings" you call them out. We really appreciate it!
