So you got a new kitten? Now What?

Some tips to get started…

Socialization 🐈

Practice handling your kitten as much as possible while they are young including touching belly, paws, toes, and nails. This will result in less stress with vet visits, nail trims, and other treatments. Treats and affection are great positive reinforcement tools.

Getting the house ready 🐈

In the home environment, offer a scratching post. They also enjoy having hiding places so consider commercial cat caves, empty boxes etc. Set up a nice safe cozy sleeping spot.

Toys 🐈

Avoid small toys and toys with long strings that your cat can ingest and potentially cause obstruction of the GI tract.

Vaccines 🐈

Kittens typically start their vaccines between the age of 6 and 12 weeks. The number of vaccines they need varies depending on how old they were when they started getting vaccines. Kittens receive their final kitten boosters at a minimum of 16 weeks of age, in order to make sure their immune system is mature enough to respond to the vaccine.

Fear free visit tips for cats 🐈‍⬛

Here are some of our favorites:

🐾 Leave the carrier out for several days so they become accustom too it.

🐾 Use pheromone spray (such as feliaway travel spray) in carrier prior to loading pet.

🐾 Play calming music in the car.

🐾 Carry the pet carrier from the bottom (not handle) so pet doesn’t swing side to side.

🐾 Place carrier on elevated areas away from dogs in the clinic.

Here’s to your next fear free visit!

Why is health screening bloodwork important for you pet?

Evaluating your pet’s health and catching medical concerns before there are obvious signs of disease is the best way to prevent serious issues.

Proactive screening can increase your pet’s lifespan by allowing the veterinary team to intervene early in disease.

It evaluates many things including; kidney and liver health, as well as, blood count and thyroid function.

A blood panel is recommended annually for all pets over 8 years of age and most pets on chronic medications.

Ask your veterinarian about what blood testing is right for your pet at your next visit. 🐾
