Iodine is an essential nutrient for bodily function, especially for the thyroid gland.

As you may already know, too much iodine can slow or even stop thyroid function.

What may be new news is that the level of iodine intake from daily diet and body care products in developed countries can be enough to affect thyroid function and can lead to thyroid disease.

While oxalates are classically considered an issue in persons with a history of kidney stones, there are indications that they are also entwined with thyroid health.

For example, thyroid autopsies have shown that 79% of adults had oxalate crystals in their thyroid glands. A rodent study also demonstrated that a high oxalate diet caused thyroid dysfunction. There are also case reports of persons with primary hyperoxaluria type 1 presenting with hypothyroidism. Therefore, investigating for hyperoxaluria may be warranted in thyroid patients.
