Thank you for this original content by .

This is the mental game we play in our heads. Hating our bodies at the age we currently are, and wishing for our younger body. But I bet if I were to ask you if you liked your body when you were that age, you would say “No” and you would find something negative to say about your thighs, stomach, hair, chest, and weight.

Body image has nothing to do with our physical body. It has everything to do with the way we think and feel about our body. Healing your body image starts from the inside out, not the outside in.

You are not a before and you are not an after. Using your body against you in a comparative, critical way is a form of body shaming. People that engage in body shaming are more likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors and disordered eating. You don’t need to get your body back, it never left you. It has been keeping you alive every day.

I have heard this time and time again. You see a person and automatically assume that based on the way they look that they have an eating disorder. Or the opposite is true, you see a person and you think to yourself, “wow they look so good” and they are privately struggling with an eating disorder.

Eating disorders are a mental health issue. Getting help for them is crucial to the person’s survival. If you need help, it is out there.

Improving your body image goes beyond how you think your body looks from head - to - toe. It affects your thoughts about every aspect of your appearance and everything you do because of what you think about your looks. Research shows that worrying about the way you look keeps you from speaking up in work meetings, playing on the beach or at the pool with your kids, or feeling confident in the bedroom. Improving your body confidence has serious benefits that go far beyond simply liking what you see in the mirror...it will change your whole life.

So many things are tied to the way we feel about our looks. Things like...what you wear or what you don’t wear. What you buy or what you don’t buy. What you do or what you don’t do. What you say to yourself or what you don’t say to yourself.

The list goes on and on. Everything you do and feel is because you are socialized (aka programmed) to believe that your value is directly related to your appearance.

I say ENOUGH of that BS! Comment below if you are ready to START appreciating your body and stop hating your body.

The strong friend.
The supermom.
The perfectly styled influencer.
The college athlete.
The wealthy entrepreneur.
The retired grandfather.
The popular girl.
The thin model.
The funny friend.
The fitness professional.
The famous celebrity.
The happy couple.
The successful surgeon.

Everyone is going through something. Even your strong friends. The common trait they all have...they learned how to hide their pain. Maybe you can relate?

You got good at smiling when you did not feel like it.
You know how to say the right thing so no one would wonder.
You got good at keeping the focus on others so you didn't have to talk about you.
You got good at acting like everything was fine.
You made sure everyone was taken care of but yourself.

Stop, Please, Stop. Stop trying to be good at these things.
Get the help. Take the meds. Talk to a therapist.

When girls worry about the way they look it can lead to problems in academia, familial, relationships, sports, and sexual health. There are many reasons girls struggle with body confidence. You will not be able to control everything. Here are things that are in your control:
How you talk about your body.
How you talk about her body.

Work on healing your relationship with your body. Show her it is possible to have body confidence 💛

Anxiety usually gets a bad rap, but it’s not always the enemy. It can also be an alert or a wake up call. Is there something you’re avoiding? Is your body telling you that something is off? Slow down and listen... you might just see something you’ve been ignoring.

You did not start your life in a negative relationship with your body. It is unlikely you have seen a toddler criticized for eating too much. We often love their squishy thighs and belly rolls. Toddlers love looking at their reflection in the mirror. They often will smile and laugh. They are living with pure joy and feeling proud of what their legs and arms can do.
The relationship a toddler has is unobstructed by race, gender, age, or disabilities. You were a toddler once, which means there was a time in your life when you kissed your reflection in the mirror. There was a time you ate uninhibitedly and you thought your body was freaking awesome too! Let this be a reminder that there was a time in your life where you LOVED your body.
Comment below with what you appreciate about your body.

The most compliments I received on my body was when my eating disorder was in full blown chaos. That’s F’d up! I was so sick mentally, emotionally, physically, and relationally. Yet, people were asking me “How did you lose the weight?”. Complimenting me with “Girl you look so good! The best you have ever looked.” People assumed I was healthy for no reason other than because of my weight loss and smaller size body.

In my head I would think...If they only knew.

This is one reason why complimenting people on their body shape and size is so damaging. For goodness sake, compliment people on anything other than how they look. Stop thinking “healthy” as synonymous with “thin”...because they are definitely not the same thing.
