Low progesterone is common — but the reasons behind it often get overlooked.

The biggest cause is not ovulating. If you don’t ovulate, you can’t form a corpus luteum, and you can’t make progesterone. This can happen with PCOS, perimenopause, and menopause… but it can also happen even when you are still cycling. Chronic stress and high cortisol burn through progesterone faster.

Undereating and over-exercising can suppress ovulation entirely.

Birth control pills are designed to stop ovulation — which means no progesterone.

Thyroid issues can interrupt ovulation and hormone production.

And insulin resistance can disrupt ovarian signaling in the same way, which is why so many women with PCOS struggle with low progesterone.

If your cycle feels “off,” the answer isn’t guessing — it’s understanding why your body isn’t able to produce the progesterone it needs.

About Our Medical Director

Dr. Sorr graduated from Arizona State University with his BS in Biological Sciences with a focus in biochemistry and endocrinology.
