What’s best for muscle gain?

A recent study says it’s your choice, depending on your preference. The results align with other evidence that lighter weights are as effective as heavier weights for muscle gain, as long as sets are performed to or close to muscular failure, and the weight is at least 30% of 1RM.

Bo anticipates a nice dip in the pool. Not really. He doesn’t care for liquid water besides that in his bowl, preferring the frozen variety of his ancestors.

A recent study found tai chi to benefit in managing chronic insomnia in middle aged and older adults. While it didn’t include young adults, I believe the results would be similar. It’s certainly worth a try!

“You don’t have to turn this into something. It doesn’t have to upset you.”—Marcus Aurelius

Anger is a natural emotion that is a normal response to things like injustice. But when we let anger enter every situation that does not go our way, it consumes us.

When your package is late, your food is cold, or traffic snarls, you have a choice on how you respond. While you cannot control the situation, you get to control your response. Choose wisely and save yourself from suffering unnecessary strife. Leave anger for the issues that deserve it, which are significantly less than you may realize.

“If it’s just the right amount of necessary kindness, it’s not really kindness. It’s pleasantness.

If the people in our circle begin to experience behavior that’s kinder than necessary, the expectations for what’s necessary will ratchet forward, making everything more pleasant.

And… being kind is a lovely way to spend your day.”

Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” Luke 23:46.

Good Friday provides us a time of reflection—the brutality of the crucifixion as well as the anticipation of the resurrection. Sometimes death is necessary before new life can arise.

This is not a painting, but a photo I took this evening. While we were out walking Bo, we heard a familiar “who” coming from our neighbor’s tree. I was able to find the wise old owl on a branch that happened to be right beside the full moon. Timing is everything! I did my best to center him and then used Lightroom to edit.

REDUCING GESTATIONAL DIABETES RISK

A simple whey protein shake can have significant benefits in reducing blood sugar spikes.

Sixty-two women received either 20g whey isolate per day or a placebo 30 minutes before breakfast during the 3rd trimester, with lab visits and home-based measurements in addition to continuous blood glucose monitoring.

Compared to placebo, the 1-hour postprandial glucose among women receiving whey protein (controlled conditions) was 15-20% lower following breakfast, and 8-14% lower in free living conditions.

Working in book number two! My goal is to publish by year’s end. I’ve got almost two hundred short chapters to help people navigate life’s many challenges. More to come…

Here is the Preface:

This book is not meant to be written in the voice of a scholar, nor by one formally trained in the art of philosophy. It is simply a collection of thoughts and reflections of one of the infinite number people who have, for a brief time, called this world their home.

Most of the wisdom found here is not my own. It is the product of countless conversations—held quietly, page by page—with thinkers, teachers, and lived experiences from generations past. What follows is my attempt to gather their voices, distill their lessons, and pass them forward. It is my belief that borrowed wisdom, when respected and practiced, becomes shared wisdom.

What sets wisdom apart from knowledge is action. Not just any action, but RIGHT action.

Knowledge is knowing the way.

Wisdom is going the way.

It is my hope that these shared insights serve you well—not as a map for your life, but as a compass. One that keeps you moving, keeps you searching, and keeps you oriented toward what matters most. May it also lead you to discover your North Star—and, more importantly, have the courage to follow it.

“If you want to study yourself—look into the hearts of other people. If you want to study other people—look into your own heart.”
—Friedrich Von Schiller
