🎉 We’re Honored & Grateful 🎉

Care Plus Hospice is proud to share that we’ve been awarded “Best of 2026” Business Rate, powered by Google Reviews, for Central Scottsdale in the Hospice category.

This recognition means everything to us because it comes directly from the voices of the families we serve. Being trusted during life’s most delicate moments is an honor we never take lightly.

Nice things are said when meaningful work is done with heart—and we are deeply thankful for every family, caregiver, and community partner who believes in what we do. 🤍

HOSPICE CARE: WHAT TO EXPECT & HOW TO RESPOND
End-Stage Liver Disease

Liver disease can cause swelling, confusion, weakness, and changes in behavior. Periods of confusion can be frightening, but staying calm and keeping the environment safe helps prevent injury.

Bleeding or sudden changes in awareness should be reported to hospice immediately. Most symptoms can be managed at home with medication and nursing support.

Hospice focuses on comfort, symptom control, and helping families feel supported during unpredictable changes.

HOSPICE CARE: WHAT TO EXPECT & HOW TO RESPOND
End-Stage Kidney Disease (Without Dialysis)

When kidney function declines, the body has trouble removing waste and extra fluids. Patients may sleep more, eat less, or become confused at times. These changes are part of the natural progression of the disease.

Families often worry about fluid intake, but forcing fluids can cause discomfort. Comfort, safety, and symptom relief are the priorities. Itching, nausea, or restlessness can usually be managed with hospice medications.

Hospice supports the patient through physical changes and provides emotional guidance so families understand what is normal and expected.

HOSPICE CARE: WHAT TO EXPECT & HOW TO RESPOND
Stroke or Neurologic Conditions

After a severe stroke or neurologic decline, patients may have difficulty swallowing, moving, or communicating. Families may worry that the patient is not improving, but hospice care focuses on comfort rather than recovery.

Safe feeding is essential. If coughing, choking, or gurgling sounds occur, stop feeding and call hospice for guidance. Repositioning, skin care, and gentle communication help maintain comfort and dignity.

Hospice nurses teach caregivers daily care techniques, manage symptoms, and help families feel confident in providing care at home.

HOSPICE CARE: WHAT TO EXPECT & HOW TO RESPOND
Advanced Lung Disease (COPD / Pulmonary Disease)

Patients with advanced lung disease often live with ongoing shortness of breath. Sudden episodes of panic or air hunger can happen and may look like an emergency. These episodes are very distressing but can usually be managed at home with the right support.

Encouraging slow breathing, keeping oxygen in place, and staying calm helps reduce fear. Strong smells, smoke, or temperature extremes can worsen breathing and should be avoided.

Hospice provides medications to ease breathing, teaches caregivers how to respond during breathing episodes, and sends nursing support when symptoms change, helping avoid unnecessary hospital trips.

WHAT TO EXPECT & HOW TO RESPOND
End-Stage Heart Disease (Heart Failure)

With advanced heart disease, the heart has difficulty pumping efficiently, which can cause shortness of breath, swelling, and extreme fatigue. Breathing may become harder even when the patient is resting. This can be frightening for both the patient and family.
Keeping the patient upright, using oxygen as prescribed, and maintaining a calm environment can greatly reduce distress. Anxiety often increases when breathing feels difficult, so staying calm and offering reassurance is very important.
Hospice focuses on relieving breathing discomfort, adjusting medications promptly, and preventing emergency situations. If breathing changes or swelling suddenly worsens, call hospice immediately—support is available 24/7.

HOSPICE CARE: WHAT TO EXPECT & HOW TO RESPOND
Dementia / Alzheimer’s Disease (Advanced Stage)

In advanced dementia, changes happen slowly and then sometimes suddenly. Speech may be limited or absent, and the patient may no longer recognize loved ones. This can be very emotional for families, but the patient can still feel comfort, safety, and reassurance through tone of voice and gentle touch.

Swallowing becomes more difficult over time. Coughing during meals, pocketing food, or refusing to eat are signs the body is changing. This is expected and not something caregivers cause. Offering food slowly, stopping when the patient shows distress, and keeping the patient upright helps prevent discomfort.

Hospice helps families understand what is normal, manages agitation or restlessness, monitors for infections, and teaches caregivers how to provide safe, dignified care without fear or guilt.

HOSPICE CARE: WHAT TO EXPECT & HOW TO RESPOND
Cancer (Advanced or Metastatic)

As cancer progresses, it is normal for the patient to experience more fatigue, less appetite, and increasing discomfort. Families often worry that they are “not doing enough,” especially when eating slows down. At this stage, the body no longer needs the same amount of food or fluids, and forcing intake can cause discomfort or choking. The most helpful thing you can do is focus on comfort, reassurance, and presence.

Pain or shortness of breath may increase unexpectedly. This does not mean something is “going wrong” or that the patient is suffering unnecessarily. Hospice medications are designed to relieve these symptoms quickly and safely. If symptoms do not improve, call hospice right away—do not wait or feel that you are bothering the team.

Hospice will adjust medications, send a nurse if needed, and guide you step by step so the patient can remain comfortable at home, without stressful hospital visits.
