Not all healthcare approaches are the same.

Symptom management focuses on relieving discomfort or stabilizing a condition. In many cases, this is necessary and appropriate — especially in acute situations.

Root cause investigation looks deeper. It evaluates the underlying drivers contributing to symptoms, including factors such as inflammation, hormone balance, nutrition, stress, lifestyle, and environmental influences.

Licensed naturopathic physicians are trained to assess both the immediate concern and the broader clinical picture.

The goal is not just short-term relief — but long-term health.

Prevention and investigation matter.

The body is not broken by default. It is designed to heal.

The principle of Vis Medicatrix Naturae — the Healing Power of Nature — reminds us that naturopathic medicine begins with trust in the body’s inherent wisdom.

ND/NMDs are trained to:
• Identify and remove obstacles to healing
• Support physiology, not suppress it
• Strengthen the foundations of health

The body knows how to heal! ND/NMDs are trained to know how to appropriately choose interventions that work with the body, not against it.

When we support digestion, regulate blood sugar, calm inflammation, balance hormones, and restore sleep — the body often responds exactly as it was designed to.

This principle is why prevention, lifestyle medicine, and individualized care matter.

It’s not passive care.
It’s strategic support of the body’s natural intelligence.

Follow AzNMA as we continue our Six Principles series and explore the foundations of naturopathic medicine in Arizona.

You know you’re a Naturopathic Doctor when you look at labs and immediately think patterns… not just ranges.

Where others see numbers, you see connections.Inflammation. Hormones. Nutrient status. Stress. Sleep. Gut health.

ND/NMDs are trained to zoom out and ask, “What’s the story here?” — not just, “Is it flagged?”

That’s the difference between symptom management and root-cause medicine.

What’s one lab pattern you spot instantly every time?

Naturopathic physicians complete accredited four-year doctoral programs, extensive clinical training, and must pass national board examinations before earning licensure.

Licensure is not just a title — it represents standardized education, supervised patient care experience, continuing medical education requirements, and regulatory oversight. It ensures ethical standards, professional accountability, and public trust.

In Arizona, licensed ND/NMDs are trained to diagnose, treat, and manage patients within a defined scope of practice that prioritizes safety and evidence-informed care.

Healthcare works best when patients receive care from qualified, regulated professionals.
Supporting licensed naturopathic physicians protects patient access, upholds professional standards, and strengthens the future of naturopathic medicine in our state.

Follow AzNMA to stay informed and help advance safe, regulated naturopathic care in Arizona.

Naturopathic Doctors (NMDs) complete a four-year, post-graduate medical program at a school accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME). Their training includes biomedical sciences, clinical diagnosis, pharmacology, and natural therapies such as nutrition, botanical medicine, and lifestyle counseling.

Accredited CNME schools include:
• Bastyr University – Washington & California
• National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM) – Oregon
• National University of Health Sciences (NUHS) – Illinois
• Sonoran University of Health Sciences (formerly SCNM) – Arizona
• Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) – Toronto, Ontario
• CCNM – Boucher Campus – Vancouver, British Columbia

Graduates must pass two national board exams (NPLEX) before licensure, and complete continuing medical education (CME) each year to remain licensed.

🚨 Advocacy Alert: Protect the Future Workforce of Naturopathic Doctors🚨

An urgent federal proposal threatens the future of naturopathic medical education.

The U.S. Department of Education has introduced a draft rule that would exclude Naturopathic Doctors from the federal definition of a “Professional Degree.”

If finalized, this change could reduce federal student loan access for future ND students by more than 50%.

This is not simply a financial issue. It directly affects:

• The future workforce of naturopathic physicians
• Access to accredited naturopathic education
• Long-term patient access to regulated, licensed ND care

Action is required before March 2.

We urge our community to review the alert and send a message to the Department of Education and Congress.

Protect the future of naturopathic medicine.

“First Do No Harm” is a foundational principle of naturopathic medicine.

It means using the least invasive, most effective interventions possible — always prioritizing patient safety and long-term wellbeing. Naturopathic physicians are trained to carefully assess risk, avoid unnecessary harm, and choose treatments that support the body’s natural healing processes.

This principle reflects a commitment to responsible, ethical, and patient-centered care. Prevention, education, and thoughtful clinical decision-making are essential to practicing medicine with integrity.

Follow AzNMA to learn more about the principles that guide licensed naturopathic physicians.

Regulation isn’t about restriction — it’s about protection.

Licensure helps ensure healthcare providers are properly trained, qualified, and held to professional standards.

This protects patients, supports safe care, and strengthens trust in the medical profession.

When standards are clear, patients can make informed decisions about their health with confidence.

Learn what licensure means for your care and how professional standards support patient safety.

In most cases, Naturopathic Medicine is eligible for payment through Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) as licensed NMDs are recognized as physicians in Arizona. Office visits and many treatments can often be reimbursed through these accounts.

Most naturopathic physicians will also provide letters of medical necessity when needed, which can help patients receive coverage for specific services or therapies under HSA/FSA guidelines.

It’s important to check with your HSA or FSA provider for specific coverage, as policies may vary. Patients frequently find that using HSA or FSA funds makes naturopathic care more accessible while allowing them to choose a physician who focuses on prevention, restoring balance, and long-term healing.
