Union EAP

Union EAP Defining a new standard of excellence for Employee Assistance Programs, starting with labor unions.

02/27/2026

“You are not alone. You don’t need to walk alone. Your union is here — we have your back.”

Union EAP CEO Ben Cort joins Chris Carlough, SMART Director of Wellness and Mental Health Support, on the Talking SMART podcast to have an honest conversation about support, connection and why reaching out is a sign of strength — not weakness.

In this episode, they discuss the real challenges union members face both on and off the job, and the importance of building a culture where no one feels like they have to handle it alone. From mental health to substance use support, the message is clear: when we show up for each other, we’re stronger together.

By filling in the gaps and breaking down barriers for mental health care and wellness support, SMART, SMOHIT and Union EAP are working to reduce the stigma and fear around asking for help, with the collective goal of improving the lives of members and their families.

You don’t have to be an expert to make a difference ⚠️ Sometimes you just need the right tools to support yourself — and those around you.

Learn more about SMART MAP from Jeremy Holburn, SMOHIT Licensed Counselor, and Chris Carlough, SMART Director of Wellness and Mental Health Support, as they discuss the training experience and why peer-to-peer support matters. SMART MAP offers immersive, peer-focused training designed to equip union members with the skills, confidence and compassion to support fellow members and loved ones facing mental health and substance use challenges. Participants learn how to listen intentionally, recognize early warning signs, and help connect others to the right resources when they need them most.

SMART MAP has grown into an essential program that includes both local peer mentor trainings and regional educational sessions. These trainings provide foundational knowledge around substance use, ethical communication, confidentiality and emotional support techniques 📝 By preparing members to support one another without judgment or pressure to “fix” the problem, the program helps reduce stigma and ensures members and their families have someone they trust to lean on during difficult moments.

Union EAP is proud to support initiatives like SMART MAP that help create workplaces where support is always within reach.

On this day in 1888, the Tin, Sheet Iron, and Cornice Workers’ International Association was founded in Toledo, Ohio — marking the beginning of a movement that would shape generations of skilled trades workers.

What began as a fight for fair wages, safer working conditions, and dignity on the job grew into the foundation of today’s International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART). For more than a century, members have stood together to protect workers’ rights, strengthen benefits, and build a safer, more sustainable future for the trades.

At Union EAP, we’re honored to support that legacy by helping improve the mental, emotional and overall well-being of union members and their families. Caring for workers has always been at the heart of organized labor — and we’re proud to be part of the continued effort to support those who build, protect and power our communities.

We are available 24/7 for members, including nights, weekends and holidays. You don’t have to solve it alone.

⚠️ Financial stress affects more than just your bank account ⬇️

🧠 Mental health → Ongoing financial pressure can increase anxiety, disrupt sleep and make it harder to focus or problem-solve. Over time, that strain can affect mood, relationships and overall well-being.

🫀Physical health → Chronic stress impacts the body and is linked to headaches, fatigue, high blood pressure, and weakened immune response — making it harder to recover and stay healthy.

🦺 Jobsite safety → When stress follows us to work, attention and reaction time can suffer. Distraction, fatigue and burnout increase the risk of mistakes and injuries on the job.

Union EAP provides confidential, 24/7 support — including financial guidance — to help members manage stress and stay safe.

You don’t have to solve it alone! Don’t be afraid to reach out. Call, text or email anytime ⬇️

Mental health deserves the same attention as physical health 📢

Union EAP CEO Ben Cort addresses the stigma that keeps too many people silent, and why avoiding these conversations doesn’t just affect us, but the people we work with, live with and care about.

With years of leadership in behavioral health, Ben reinforces a critical message: there is no reason we should feel uncomfortable talking about what’s happening in our minds compared to our bodies.

True strength often requires the willingness to talk, ask questions and find solutions.

Union EAP provides free, confidential, 24/7 support for union members and their families for mental health, substance use concerns, financial and legal stress, crisis response, and overall wellness.

You don’t have to solve it alone.

⚠️ Union EAP was created as a direct response to the challenges union members and construction workers face. From elevated su***de and substance use rates to everyday difficulties, we know union members need more support for life’s struggles. It is an honor to work with SMART and SMOHIT to provide the services and resources members need and deserve. We believe that education is prevention, awareness is key, and immediate crisis support is essential to not only improve the lives of union members, but in some cases, save them.

SMART General President Michael Coleman and General Secretary-Treasurer John Daniel discuss the collective goal to change the trajectory of SMART by acknowledging the struggles union members face, as well as Union leadership’s responsibility to affect real change.

“We’re really able to make people’s lives — the people who work everyday, the people we represent — we can make their lives better. We’re not finished, we’re just getting started.”
