Alumni Spotlight: Kathleen

At 62 years old, Kathleen reached a moment she could not ignore. “I was no longer living life, I was merely alive.”

After a long night of drinking and using, she thought about her children and grandchildren and what it would mean for them to receive a call that she had self-destructed. “The thought was terrifying,” she shared. “In that very moment I knew something had to change or I was going to die.”

Determined to find the right support, Kathleen began searching for a recovery center that offered a variety of therapies. That search led her to Texas Recovery Centers, a decision she now calls “the best decision that I ever made.”

Nearly 19 months later, Kathleen is “no longer a hostage to drugs and alcohol.” She has rebuilt relationships with her children and her husband and strengthened her faith. While the road was not easy, she leaned on the support around her and made the choice to no longer let her disease have dominion over her life.

Today, Kathleen serves as the Director of Celebrate Recovery at her local church, helping others work through their “hurts, hang-ups, and habits.” She says, “there is no greater feeling than paying it forward in your recovery journey.”

“I am now living life and not just being alive.”

Her message to anyone starting their journey: “KEEP GOING!!! You are worth it.” Kathleen reminds others that while recovery may require letting go of people and things that no longer serve you, “the new life that replaces it will far surpass anything that you have to give up.”

Cravings can feel overwhelming, but they’re temporary. The wave metaphor reflects the nature of cravings: they rise, peak, and eventually subside. Urge surfing is a mindfulness-based practice designed to help individuals manage cravings by "riding the wave" of an urge without acting on it. It's important to remember that cravings rise, peak, and pass if we ride them out 🌊🏄‍♀️

Research shows that strong social support is one of the most important factors in long-term recovery. When people feel connected and supported, they’re more likely to stay engaged in their recovery and build healthier lives. Support groups, therapy, peers, and community can help people stay accountable, feel understood, and build a life that supports sobriety.
