Admittedly I knew nothing about the sport, but jumped at the opportunity to get involved with such a unique game.

I have absolutely fallen in love with the sport (RIP Sabercats) and being the team doc for these teams has been one of the highlights of my career thus far.

I know Jimmy has had fun learning the sport too, including all the fun “terminology” which is always hilarious seeing someone’s reaction the first time they hear a certain position name.

But….do you have to be a rugby player to benefit from our approach to PERFORMANCE-driven healthcare?

💪OUCH! Why Bruises Spread After a Muscle Tear 💪

When you tear a muscle, tiny blood vessels called capillaries break inside the muscle. This makes blood leak out into the muscle tissue, which is what causes the bruise you see.

The bruise spreads because blood doesn’t stay in one spot - it follows gravity and moves through the spaces between your muscles. Think of it like spilling juice on a paper towel - it spreads out from where you first spilled it. The blood travels along the paths between muscle fibers and can move to areas far from where the tear happened.

Bruises can be inside the muscle or between muscles. When blood gets between muscles (aka intermuscular), it spreads more easily and shows up as bigger bruises on your skin. When blood stays trapped inside the muscle (intramuscular), the bruise might be smaller but can hurt more.

The good news? Your body has special clean-up cells that come in to remove the old blood and help your muscle heal. This is why bruises change colors - from red to purple to yellow - as your body breaks down and removes the blood 🩸 over time.

💪 Bottom line: Bruises spread because blood follows gravity and moves through spaces in your body, not just where the muscle tore!

Unfortunately for he displays massive bruising following a triceps tear.

As we’ve covered before, the initial stages following a muscle tear needs to be focused on protection and limiting load/stretch to allow the initial healing process to occur (i.e. being too aggressive too fast with exercise or forcing range of motion can worsen damage).

So our first treatment revolved around lots of e-stim, laser, and using to quickly eliminate the bruising.

I recommended he train the OPPOSITE arm hard and heavy as usual to speed up healing and prevent muscle size/strength loss on the injured arm via the crossover effect as well as blood flow restriction (BFR) on the OPPOSITE again given the systemic benefits for speeding up healing while avoiding icing the arm as this would actually slow down healing…⤵️
