Today, our Heber Springs Practical Nursing students proudly wore pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, not just as a color, but as a symbol of strength, hope, and compassion. 💕

As future nurses, they understand that awareness saves lives, early detection makes a difference, and empathy brings healing beyond medicine. Today wasn’t just about wearing pink; it was about standing in solidarity with every fighter, survivor, and family touched by breast cancer.

We’re proud of these students for showing that nursing is not only about clinical skills, but also about heart, advocacy, and community. 🌸

Day 7: Nursing Learning Abroad in El Salvador.

After an early 7 a.m. start and a full day of traveling and flying, we are finally back home in Arkansas. Our hearts are full and minds overflowing with memories from our time in El Salvador. This journey has opened our eyes in so many ways. We’ve seen how healthcare looks different in another country and have been reminded just how blessed we are here in America.

We return not only grateful for the opportunity to serve and learn, but also eager to share the stories, lessons, and friendships that have impacted our lives. We can’t wait to tell others what we’ve experienced and to let these insights shape the way we care for our patients, our neighbors, and our world.

To our friends at UNICAES, thank you for welcoming us with such warmth and generosity. Your kindness and hospitality made this experience truly memorable.

Our students represented ASUB with professionalism and a genuine eagerness to learn, showing the heart and dedication of future healthcare professionals. This trip may be over, but the perspective and partnerships we gained will last a lifetime.

Day 6: Nursing Learning Abroad in El Salvador.

Today we began with a visit to Ataco, where the streets were filled with many local merchant’s shops. From handmade purses to baby dolls and rings, each item reflected the artistry and heart of the El Salvadorian people. On our way, we caught a breathtaking view of a Volcano which served as a reminder of the beauty displayed in this country.

Later, we visited the Santa Ana Mall, enjoyed lunch, and spent some time shopping before returning to the UNICAES campus to pack and have dinner. A few even completed some exams to wrap up the trip.

Tonight, as we pack our bags and prepare to start the journey home tomorrow, we do so with full hearts. We carry with us the lessons we’ve learned, the people we’ve met, and the impact this experience has made. We hold dear the memories that we will never forget and perspectives that will forever guide us in our nursing journey.

Day 5: Nursing Learning Abroad in El Salvador.
Today we visited Casa del Asiono in Metapán, a rest home filled with quiet dignity and the gentle strength of those who care for its residents. As we toured the facility and listened to their stories, we were deeply moved by the devotion of the nurses, who serve in 24-hour shifts and lovingly provide every aspect of care—bathing, feeding, giving medications, leading activities, and offering companionship. Their tireless dedication reminded us what it truly means to serve with compassion.

In the afternoon, we traveled to Lake Coatepeque, a volcanic crater lake formed over 50,000 years ago. The area was beautiful and we even took a boat ride across the lake. A few even decided to be adventurous and ride a jet ski. One was able to meet a well-known Mexican comedian named Archie.

During our evening reflection, we shared a renewed gratitude for the selfless care and beauty we observed. We ended our day inspired and strengthened, ready to pour that same love and dedication into nursing and the lives of those we encounter and serve.

Day 4: Nursing Learning Abroad in El Salvador.

Today we toured the UNICAES nursing building, laboratories, and surrounding grounds. We spoke with nursing students, explored their skills labs, and visited the on-campus clinic, which includes a surgical suite for eye procedures. During surgeries, a single nurse manages multiple tasks to keep everything running smoothly—this is no less than an impressive display of skill and focus. We have found that nurses in El Salvador are challeged everyday, working with limited resources. However, they continue to press on to ensure patients receive the best care possible.

After our campus tour, we explored the street markets in Santa Ana’s city center. We concluded the day with a particularly meaningful moment as our ASUB nursing students presented scholarships—funds they had personally raised through campus fundraising efforts—to the UNICAES nursing students to help with their tuition. The recipients were deeply touched and grateful, and many of us grew emotional as we witnessed how this gift could transform their lives and support them in completing their studies..

Our visit ended with a presentation from a UNICAES nursing student who shared her research on nursing student knowledge on vaccine administration. Her team discovered that additional training significantly improves students’ understanding of vaccination schedules.

We closed the day with an excellent dinner, and round table discussion on the many lessons we’ve learned and the blessings of our time so far in El Salvador.

Day 3: Nursing Learning Abroad in El Salvador. Traveled to UNICAES satellite campus in Ilobasco. Toured their nursing building, labs and campus. Then walked the city market. Learned many great things about their nursing student experiences. Technical programs attend college 2 years and Bachelors 5. All theory is covered first and then students attend their practicum. Once students are finished with the college experience they are required to work for 6 months (called social service) before beginning their nursing employment and being paid. No national exam such as the NCLEX is required.
