Hi everyone!

This Tuesday, 3/8, UW IPhO and UW AMCP collaborated to host a roundtable discussion "What is HEOR?" We have six fantastic guest speakers coming out to discuss what HEOR is, job opportunities, and how you can prepare yourself for this career path. Additionally, we are hosting a raffle for a $10 amazon gift card for two students who attend this event! We are holding this event in person from 4-5 PM PST in the health science building T-360. For those who can't attend in person, there is a ZOOM option for you! It is a great event to explore a possible career path and network with outstanding pharmacists. We hope to see you there!

On February 23rd, 2022 UW’s IPhO Chapter hosted a vibrant panel discussion on Regulatory Affairs as part of our series What's Industry?

Our panelists for this event were:

Nick James, PharmD, MBA, Global Regulatory Affairs Fellow at UCB
Ananya Murali, PharmD, Global Regulatory Affairs Fellow at AstraZeneca
Jessica Peng, PhamrD, Regulatory Affairs Manager, Ascendis Pharma
Yolanda Peprah, PharmD, Regulatory Affairs Fellow at Bayer Pharmaceuticals

Our panelists discussed why the choose a career in industry, how they decided on regulatory affairs, and what they think best prepared them for this role! A key takeaway from this session, for those interested in pursuing industry fellowships, or direct to industry roles, was the importance of building a well-rounded CV throughout your four years in pharmacy school. A reoccurring theme we keep hearing from our speakers across our IPhO series is the value of a candidate who has great project management skills. Academic success is important, but so is well defined leadership roles, and participating in activities or passions outside of school and work. When selecting extra-curriculars to participate in, make sure it is purposeful and adding value to the overall package you will be selling when interview season comes around. This past Wednesday, we had our second event in our series What's Industry? This event focused on what it means to be a Commercial and Marketing pharmacist. Marketing plays a vital role at each stage of the product's life cycle, especially approaching launch and after launch. To promote, advertise, and deliver the product's value to customers and partners, marketing is responsible for translating the company's commercial strategy into tactical plans. Ultimately, all strategies lead to the differentiation of the company's product in the marketplace, highlighting the brand's benefits and maximizing product uptake. A pharmacist plays a vital role in brand management. Not only are pharmacists an expert on medications, but we have a wealth of knowledge regarding relationships/interactions with patients and healthcare professionals.

Our panelists discussed a wide range of topics that led to their career paths in marketing as a pharmacist. They:
- Took classes that exposed them to the area
- Had previous sales experience and wanted to tie it with a career as a pharmacist
- Got exposure into the field through clubs while in pharmacy school
- Wanted to use the skills they developed over the years

This past Thursday, 1/27, we held our first event in our new series called "What's Industry?" During this event we focused on what it means to be a MSL and a Medical Affairs Officer. We had a panel of four guest speakers talk about their experiences within this field and they gave some great advice! Our guest speakers were Josh Gener, Teresa Osborn, Richard Lee, and Michael Schaefer. Our key takeaways from this events are;

- In industry you work cross functionally across different fields, this maybe challenging but that's what makes it interesting
- The soft skills we learn in this program allows us to learn quickly and excel within industry.
- Ways to break into industry other than networking include; attending IPhO events, keeping up to date on the latest news, summer internships, and joining research/clinicals trials with faculty.
- Make sure you can connect a story with your current experiences. If you can't explain why you're pursuing/applying for an experience it won't help you in the long run
- Its okay if you don't know what you want to do quite yet!

This past November we had our first club social at Happy Lemon in U Village. This social was the first time we were able to meet in person as a club and we are thankful to everyone who joined us! During the social we got to know our club members, discussed their interest in industry and educate them on upcoming events. We look forward to hosting more club socials either online or in person this quarter and we hope to see you there! :)

This past Monday 11/29 UW's chapter of IPhO held our first ever internship panel. Our guest speakers included Joshua Gener, Deven Gerboth, and Gilbert Ko. During this event they discussed their internship experiences, how to be successful within industry, and answered student questions. A lot of great information was shared during this session and if you weren't able to make it our president Tim Soverns summed his key takeaways:

1. Internships aren’t required but highly recommended
2. Networking & networking
3. Leverage ALL your experience
4. Believe it till you achieve it

During the meeting our guest speakers will be going over their internship experiences, answering student questions, and discussing how to apply for internships. Our guest speakers are Josh Gener, Devin Gerboth, and Gilbert Ko. They are excited to meet everyone and discuss internship opportunities available for students who are interested in non-traditional pharmacy careers. Also, we are providing snacks during the meeting!
