For many, the changing of seasons marks the beginning of months of fatigue, lethargy, and depression. About 5% of people in the United States suffer from SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder. Research has shown that Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) can reduce the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder. It is a safe and effective alternative to traditional treatments, with fewer side-effects than medication.

Life during Covid-19 has been challenge after challenge. Not only has the pandemic threatened our physical health, but it has also affected our mental health, increasing stress, anxiety, and depression among many people. On top of that, studies are finding that those who catch Covid-19 are at risk of suffering from “Long Covid” a set of symptoms including brain fog, fatigue, breathing difficulties, anxiety, and depression which can last months after initial Covid-19 infection.

Luckily, a solution to these new challenges may have been found in neuromodulation and TMS. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is being looked at as a potential treatment for the increased stress of life during the pandemic. Similarly, Noninvasive Brain Stimulation is being looked at as a potential treatment for “Long Covid” symptoms.

New research suggests that brain stimulation may help reactivate silenced cells of the nervous system in long COVID by increasing their oxygen supply.

While depression is present in all age groups, it can be more difficult to recognize and diagnose as we get older. In older adults, many of the common symptoms of depression can be hidden by or associated with other illnesses, medication side effects, or signs of aging.

On top of this, many symptoms specific to older adults make diagnosing depression much more difficult. Instead of reporting typical depression symptoms, like feeling sad or hopeless, people in this age group may instead report worsening headaches, arthritis pain, or lower motivation.

Check out this article from the NIH to learn more about depression in older adults:

Depression, a common mood disorder, is not a normal part of aging. Learn more about symptoms, causes, and treatment of major depression and other types.
