My sleigh of poinsettias gifting to our office building neighbors and other providers in our neighborhood. Some might say the other providers are our business competition but I say the better we support one another the better we all do. One of my values as a provider is there are plenty of patients/clients to go around and I take pride in matching patients with the right provider tools but almost more importantly the right provider personality. Grateful for the community of providers and businesses that we are surrounded by and how we support one another.

Saunas, cold plunges, and hydrotherapy are becoming all the rage, but naturopathic doctors have been excited about these practices for a long time. Welcome to the scene, we are glad you’re here! ;) Did you know that has a form of hydrotherapy on site called constitutional hydrotherapy that combines hot and cold treatments on the chest and back that support lymphatic, digestive and immune function? The spa and bath house culture is one of the things that drew me to the Pacific Northwest and I love that the options are expanding.

Turns out people like human-ness. This is one of the main ways I’ve grown my practice for patients and also retained employees and built an awesome office culture. For some reason we’ve been taught culturally that being human is unprofessional, but in reality we all crave it. My main moto in my business has been that we spend the majority of our time with the people we work with so we might as well find ways to enjoy it and support one another. Enough of the toxic work culture and healthcare systems! It takes work to show up in this way and it’s not perfect but on the days it does work it feels incredibly rewarding.

My kids came to have lunch with me this week at work. Sometimes as an entrepreneur, business owner and mother I have these moments where I feel like I’m a child playing house and this was one of them. Seeing these bright eyes come through the door in the middle of a busy day totally shifted my nervous system. To all the parents out there running businesses I see you. Running a business is not all that different than parenting, it never stops, it needs constant support and care, it needs to be fed to grow and it’s forever changing. When I first became a mom I felt absolutely rattled to have a sweet baby to tend to while having my work baby also need me. The balance is never perfect but over the years of parenting and my business growing my internal resources have evolved to feel less rattled, to have better support structures around me so that both my home and work lives can thrive and practicing the skill it takes to oscillate my nervous system between my work roll and parenting roll. Both take a village and sometimes a village for a business comes in the form of amazing employees that feel like family, my attorney, book keepers, billers and so many other businesses that help keep ours running.

As the founder of OCH I believe a business can only be as healthy and successful as the work environment and culture and I have poured my heart into supporting the amazing team of clinicians and staff that we have been so fortunate to gather so that patients can experience our best clear and compassionate support. As a patient you’ll feel it from your experience all the way from our administrative staff to your provider appointment. We want you to have a human connection to our team. We don’t care just because it’s our job, we care because it also brings us joy and connection to support humans and this is why we are in this work.

A brief window into how things have evolved since starting . So much gratitude for the team of people to get me here, including all the many patients who have trusted me in their care. Starting and growing a business is not just the ‘work’ to make it happen. It’s a mental health endurance marathon with the many decisions that impact the business, endless opportunities to pivot or to take risks or maintain. Ever since starting my own business I can’t stop thinking about how every single business we engage with has someone behind the scenes who started it from the ground up. Someone who thought of everything all the way down to the toilet paper in the bathroom. Every system created, even if appearing simple on the outside, took thought and a system creation. Often if a system in a business isn’t even noticed then that’s the one that is the most streamlined. There is so much work that is unseen as an entrepreneur and some days there can be a major win to celebrate while others all I can celebrate is that we didn’t run out of toilet paper. More to come on what support systems help make the mental health aspects of running a business sustainable and what internal growth is needed to grow a business relationally.

Meet Kailina! Kailina is the newest addition to our team and is bringing acupuncture services to One Connection Healthcare. We are so excited to have her join us and the addition of her care for patients feels like icing on the cake to create a comprehensive approach to treatment.
