October is ADHD Awareness Month, and here at Acorn and Oak BAES, we're honoring the unique attributes and abilities associated with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). For every challenge that individuals with ADHD may face, there is usually a superpower brewing under the surface! For every challenge that individuals with ADHD may face, there is usually a superpower brewing under the surface!

🎯 While staying on-task might be a challenge, they can often maintain long bouts of focused attention to tasks and activities they are passionate about, also called “hyperfocus.” This can often result in remarkable productivity!

🤸‍♀️ Restlessness and fidgeting can be a sign of boundless physical energy - This surplus energy can be channeled into physical activities or hobbies, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

🗣️ Social Impulsiveness can often be channeled into charisma - Many people with ADHD are engaging and charismatic, making them excellent communicators and influencers.

📚Disorganization can be a struggle, but it can also result in adaptive problem-solving - Many individuals with ADHD develop effective strategies for managing their environment and organizing tasks in unconventional yet efficient ways.

💥Impulsivity or acting without thinking can lead to “unexpected behaviors” that may be viewed as disruptive-but it can also lead to creativity and the ability to generate novel and innovative ideas quickly.

We love Goblin.tools Magic To-Do! This type of task tool is called a Task Analysis. A task analysis is a process for breaking down large tasks or skills into smaller, more manageable steps. These smaller steps can be taught independently and then chained together to complete larger tasks (Cooper et al., 2020). Our team uses task analysis every day to teach learners new processes and routines. Goblin.tools is a unique program that can help you teach your child to tie their shoes, make a turkey sandwich, or shower independently. It can help you develop new dinner ideas, estimate how long a task will take, and help you find the right tone for a written message.

We love discovering the unique strengths and gifts that each of our clients possess! We cherish human diversity in all forms, including neurodiversity, because varied characteristics and perspectives make this world better. Our goal is never to change anyone, but to help people thrive in their communities and shape their environments to meet their needs.

Though we still live in a world where diagnoses and labels may be necessary for access to critical services (and often even preferred by individuals with disabilities), we can shift how we think about neurodiversity and create more inclusive environments. Rather than expecting everyone to fit into a specific box designed for some, we hope to create environments that allow everyone to reach their potential and goals.

Shifting mindsets is undoubtedly an essential first step!

In choosing our company name, we wanted to find something that accurately reflected our perspectives about how humans thrive. As we reflected on our combined experiences serving individuals, families, and schools, we knew that our vision included supporting multiple layers of the systems.

Since we share a deep appreciation of trees (and for plants and nature generally), the metaphor of the acorn and oak felt like the perfect fit. Just as the acorn cannot thrive without a healthy tree and ecosystem, humans cannot thrive without healthy support systems and environments. Our model of support and services reflects this understanding as we aim to support individuals and their surrounding ecosystems.

Welcome to our page! We started this company as a labor of love in 2020 when we realized that we could reach more people through our innovative partnership. As helping professionals and small business owners, our goals are to support neurodiverse learners both individually and systemically (hence the acorn and oak theme!). We provide individualized services (like ABA and consultation) and support systems services (like trainings, workshops, resources).

We invite you to join us on the next chapter of our journey as we expand our reach into the social media dimension in our goal to create a connected and supportive community with a shared purpose. Let’s go!
