At Emerald City Pilates, less Is more – for your core, that is...

The Pilates Reformers we use at Emerald City Pilates have five springs attached to the carriage as it slides along the frame. Each spring’s tension (or resistance) varies and you can also vary the resistance by applying multiple springs for any given exercise.

BUT, in Pilates, unlike most weight/resistance exercises, less is more. The less resistance, the fewer springs you engage, the harder you — specifically, your core muscles – are required to work.

How Many Springs Should I Use?

Which springs, and how many of them you should use, varies from person to person and exercise to exercise. Based on your experience and your ability, we’ll tell you which springs, and how many, to use before starting any exercise. If we see, or you feel, the resistance is too much or too little, we’ll have you adjust your springs accordingly.

The goal is to enable you to perform each Pilates exercise with deliberate control and stability. If a given exercise is too easy or too hard, we’ll have you adjust your springs. You will adjust your springs throughout the class depending on whether you’re working your core, arms, legs, or back, and depending on if you’re in a standing, sitting, or prone position.

Increased Stability Throughout Your Day

Pilates activates the small stabilizer muscles in your body, not just the larger, primary muscles. Traditional lower body workouts focus on your quadriceps and your hamstrings. But, Pilates Reformer also works your hip flexors – stretching and strengthening them. The result is less pain in your lower torso because you’ve gained greater stability as you move.

Mobility, Not Just Flexibility

Pilates Reformer classes at Emerald City Pilates emphasize mobility over flexibility. Flexibility is important, but mobility requires to control your body throughout the full range of the movements. Balance is a funny thing. As toddlers, we struggle to maintain our balance as we learn to walk. By the time we’re three-years-old, we’ve pretty much got walking, and the balance it requires, nailed down. Barring any injury or illness, we maintain our postural balance for the majority of our adult lives. But… as we age, we undergo “numerous molecular, physiological, functional, motor and psychological changes…” as a group of scientists who conducted a study for the U.S. National Center for Biotechnology Information.

At Emerald City Pilates, we help our clients improve their balance to mitigate the postural balance issues and reduced muscle mass/strength that come with aging. Loss of balance can also lead to reduced physical-functional capacity and increased risk of falling.

The scientists looked at whether doing Pilates could help improve balance. Their conclusion: Participation in the Pilates component of the study led to improved static and dynamic balance. The work you’ll do in a Private Pilates Session at Emerald City Pilates, includes various exercises that will force your body to react in opposition to the loss of balance. That, in turn, helps you improve your balance throughout your daily activities.

Better balance leads to fewer falls and less likelihood of injury.
