The UW Hand Surgery team proudly represented us at the ASSH Annual Meeting in Vancouver this weekend! Congratulations to Dr. Boe, whose abstract on AI-assisted triage of hand surgery referrals earned Top Annual Scientific Poster recognition. We’re fortunate to train alongside an amazing group of hand surgery mentors, including those from both plastic and orthopedic surgery backgrounds, who continue to lead and inspire through their dedication to education and research.

✨ INTERN SPOTLIGHT ✨

Closing out our intern introductions, meet Tim!

Originally from Shenzhen, China, Tim later lived in Toronto and St. Louis before heading to the Bay Area for college. At UC Berkeley, his curiosity couldn’t be contained by just one field. He graduated with both a BS in Bioengineering and a BA in Music, concentrating in classical piano performance. 🎹

He then completed medical school at Cornell University, where he discovered his passion for plastic surgery- a specialty whose innovative and transformative nature deeply resonated with him. 🩺

When asked why he chose UW, Tim shared: “for its unparalleled cases, its diverse patient population across the WWAMI region, and its strong culture of collaboration and support.” While Tim is humble about his talents, his meticulous attention to detail and strong work ethic make a lasting impact on both his colleagues and patients. 💜💛

Outside of the OR, Tim loves traveling, trying new restaurants, playing piano, and hitting the tennis court. 🎾

🌟 🔬 RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT 🔬 🌟

What is the role of surgery in spinal cord injury (SCI) management?

Of the 18,000 patients in the United States experiencing SCI annually, few undergo surgery as part of their multidisciplinary care.

This excellent review in published in Muscle & Nerve by Hand and Peripheral Nerve surgeons Dr. Christopher Crowe and Dr. Katie Liu highlights the critical role of reconstructive surgery, such as nerve and tendon transfers, in improving upper extremity function after SCI. They also provide a comprehensive framework for evaluating and managing these complex injuries in the clinical setting.

We thank them for sharing their expertise and highlighting opportunities to improve outcomes for patients with SCI! 💪
