Your TMJ is one of the most used joints in your body. And just like a knee or a shoulder, it can develop problems.

A TMJ disorder is anything that persistently disrupts how your jaw joint functions. That could mean muscle spasm, tendonitis, disc displacement, or inflammation in the joint capsule.

The good news: most TMJ issues are temporary and respond well to conservative treatment like jaw rest, anti-inflammatory medications, and stress management.

If symptoms like jaw pain, locking, clicking, or headaches persist through conservative care, it may be worth seeing a specialist.

Symptoms that warrant a more urgent evaluation: facial weakness, inability to open your mouth, unexplained weight loss, or facial numbness.
