From my journal this past weekend:

Stop Trying To Fix It

If you are cold
Get a blanket
If you are cold
Turn up the heat
If you are cold
Make hot tea
But for Gods Sake
Stop Trying to Change the Weather

Reclaiming your time and energy looks like carving time out to daydream.

Creative process and new ideas take time for your brain to rest and wander.

Staring at leaves, the horizon, fire, water…anything that allows your attention softly drift onto something soothing and repetitive is a primal way for our brains to reset and allow for divergent connections to happen.

The trick is to also watch out for spinning or rumination on stress or habitual thought patterns, when you notice that, gently bring your attention back to the focal point.

(Music is also another easily accessible way to do this same process.)

Pix of a middle aged white woman staring off into the distance driving a sailboat near wooded islands.

Reclaiming your time and energy while working at home looks like creating an inspiring and comfortable space to spend long hours. (If you have the privilege to do so.)

Key ingredients:

1. Color. Always color. What colors are soothing or inspiring for you?

2. Notice all the fidgets, body based needs easily accessed around the desk, and visual reminders to ground. (Bob & Brad foot massager, strap for stretching, wobble seat, standing desk.)

3. Light. I only do warm bulbs, and lots of them. Especially in the PNW long dark winters, this is key. You can’t see it, but I have a south facing window that looks out over an area where children play and there are trees in the distance. Hearing their giggles and cries grounds me in humanity.

4. Probably the most important: a door. I can close at the end of the day and walk away from work.

Pictured is a bright yellow office/art studio filled to the brim with treasures.

Reclaiming your time and energy looks like meandering and quiet walks in nature.

I'm still not on socials much these days. When I do pop on I have mixed feelings.

1. Joy to see how folks are doing.
2. Smiles from quick connections.
3. Overwhelm of information.
4. Disturbed peace of mind from content/state of the world.
5. Addictive scrolling, or wanting to pick it up to scroll, and lack of focus.
6. A feeling of needing to hustle, to do or be something coming from a sense of comparison or lack.

Any of this sound familiar?

I do think there can be a way to engage social media healthily, I have tried many to most tactics and haven't found any that work long term. I will say, being on here less has given me the following:

1. More connection with my in person relationships.
2. More peace of mind.
3. Increased focus.
4. A healthier sense of priority and self values on the day to day.
5. Better outcomes in what I choose to learn, engage and work on.
6. More time to do things I love rather than scroll.

Habits are hard to break folks. The first steps are awareness of what we are currently doing and asking, is it what I want to be doing? Then exploring what you would rather replace a habit with. For me, it's a lot of going off screens and into nature.

What would you like to be doing with your mind and time?
