Much has been said about Donald Trump’s narcissism, autocratic inclinations, and disconnection from reality, Jeffrey Goldberg writes, “but not nearly enough has been said about his fundamental indecency, the characteristic that undergirds everything he says and does.” https://theatln.tc/UYWP3jry

“We have been watching indecency triumph in the public sphere on and off for more than 10 years now, since the moment Trump insulted John McCain’s war record,” Goldberg argues. But weighed against a lengthy public record of degeneracy, his decision to pardon the participants in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, “represents the lowest moment of this presidency so far,” Goldberg writes.

A vestige of America’s pre-independence past, the authority to pardon is an unchecked monarchical power, and “should only be bestowed on leaders blessed with self-restraint, civic-mindedness, and most important, basic decency,” Goldberg writes.

The discussion of Trump’s indecency came up in a conversation Goldberg had with Barack Obama in 2017, in which Goldberg asked what Obama felt was the most norm-defying act of his successor to date. Obama mentioned Trump’s speech at the Boy Scouts’ National Jamboree earlier that year. “This appearance has been largely forgotten,” Goldberg writes. “At one point, Trump told the scouts about a wealthy friend of his who, he suggested, did unmentionable things on his yacht.”

“You can stand in front of tens of thousands of teenage boys and encourage them to be good citizens and helpful to their mothers,” Obama told Goldberg at the time, “or you can go ‘Lord of the Flies.’ He went ‘Lord of the Flies.’”

"I've got a f-ing president who pardoned all the people who assaulted me and called them 'patriots,' 50% of the country thinks I'm a traitor, I get death threats every single f-ing day, I lost my career, I lost my friends, I had my entire life turned upside down, all because of me doing my job."

This is what law enforcement officers faced. Trump cannot rewrite the recorded, documented events.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (a private agency that has steered federal funding to PBS, NPR, and hundreds of public television and radio stations across the country) has been formally dissolved due to the Republican-controlled Congress cutting funding-- further dissolving freedom of press.

Was it Captain Mark Kelly who ordered the killing of people clinging to a boat in the water; or unilaterally executed the overthrow of a government because of oil (I mean, drugs); or randomly arrest United States citizens? All of which are serious crimes.

Trump considered the rioters he pardoned as "patriots," whom since have been charged in connection to new crimes including: plotting the murder of FBI agents who investigated the riot (as retaliation); violent assault; possession of child sexual abuse material, among other crimes. True patriots.

All the while re-traumatizing those who were doing their jobs, protecting the Capitol and the lawmakers who were inside, exacerbated by statements made from Trump and some GOP lawmakers who minimized the violence the officers experienced.

Remind me-- who are the true patriots?

Five years after the Capitol riot, some of the police officers who fought off the rioters that day say they're still struggling with what happened.
