If I EVER complain about washing linens again, remind me that I don’t have to carry my massage sheets on top of my head down to a river, wash them by hand, then drape them on a sunny hillside and sit beside them until they dry, or simply hold them in the breeze until they are ready to go.

I am in Goa in southern India taking a course in Chavutti Thirumal, sometimes called Keralite massage or Indian Sports Massage. After generously oiling the body, the Practioner uses his or feet to slide, push and glide, using a rope for balance. Traditionally done by men for men, this tradition began as part of a martial arts practice. I found a gracious and knowledgeable teacher who learned the techniques from her then 94-year-old master. She makes it look like a
dance—easy and graceful.
