Often, it’s not IF we do some thing, but HOW. The brain is constantly collecting cues from our body about our state of well-being. And a chest breath is a stressed breath!

When we breathe diaphragmatically, it’s much more efficient and helps to stimulate the more relaxed part of the nervous system.

Some say how you breathe is how you live. It also gets to be a hard-wired habit. is a wonderful way to retrain breathing to support your health and your nervous system. Of course, I’m biased, but breathing is free! And you do it all the time.

Please forgive my illustration skills, perhaps one of these days I’ll take a drawing class 🙃

In the latest edition of “I can’t draw” I ponder the question “How do you move through your day?”

How we are in our bodies sends a message to our brain about our state of affairs. If our body is stressed, it prepares our brain for fight/flight.

When we are more aware, connected, and physically regulated, this tells our brain things are ok.

For me personally, learning about biofeedback back in medical school was a game changer! I had never realized I was holding my breath, breathing shallowly, and tensing all kinds of muscles.

is a powerful way to reconnect the mind and body. Not to shabby, since your body is always with you. Happy Wednesday from

Who here has tried to make too many changes too fast and given up? (👋)
Then you might feel bad about yourself. (👋👋)
REAL CHANGE, especially in regards to health or habit changes are most sustainable when you do a little bit at a time consistently. This couldn’t be truer for which does not create overnight changes, but gently nudges your body overtime to reach a different place.
But this isn’t just about biofeedback, this is about any kind of change you would like to make whether it’s related to food, movement, or a behavior that’s no longer serving.
Sustainable change takes consistency and time, and a little self compassion 💜 (ok a lot of self compassion) for when we sometimes flop.

Did you know your ❤️ sends more signals to your 🧠 than the other way around?! When I learned this... 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Heart rate variability biofeedback (or HRV) is an accessible, pragmatic, and beautiful way to train:
- emotional flexibility and resiliency
- the cardiovascular system to regulate blood pressure more effectively
- the autonomic nervous system
- stress recovery

When the nervous system functions better, so does your whole body! Yippee!
This includes sleep, digestion, brain function, and our very own precious ability to SELF REGULATE.
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Your ❤️ is not just a blood pump. In Chinese medicine, it is where the Shen or spirit resides. Can you sense it?
Happy Wednesday from .debbiemiller at , your friendly and art-challenged biofeedback provider

Language and how we talk to ourselves or about ourselves is important!! Many exclamation points!!
“Bad posture” translates into “I’m doing something bad/wrong.”

Using nonjudgmental or language makes a big difference.
If your posture is just “slouched” you’re calling a spade a spade, and you’re just being factual. And you’re not being so hard on yourself.
Using nonjudgmental words makes a difference. It’s not easy, that I can promise you. It takes practice just like riding a bike. You might be wobbly the first go around... probably fall off a few times. For we are human after all!

Oh, hello. I took a break from making my stick figures for a good while. It just wasn’t the time. I turned my focus to navigating my practice in the middle of a pandemic. It has been a true privilege to help people during this immensely difficult time.
Sometimes, we know what we have to do. But sometimes it is also just not the right time. It’s OK to care for yourself and wait for it.
Time. It is what is being robbed from us, and yet all we have. Sometimes too much of it. Often, not enough.
How are you navigating your time? Sometimes all we need to do is breathe and that is enough.
From my internal ticker to yours, happy Tuesday from 💜

Important article! I wouldn't say these are "new ways" the body gets stressed - most of these are COMMON ways stress expresses itself. However the AMOUNT of unrelenting stressed is what has changed - please please please take good care of yourself. Whatever practice resonates for you. Of course, I am partial to biofeedback but there are lots of ways to address chronic stress.

Tingling feet, digestive troubles, skin issues and more may be caused by some of the stress and life changes that the coronavirus has brought.
