There such a mystery that remains even in areas we think we understand well.
Take proteins, for example. They are responsible for nearly everything that happens in the body structure, signaling, repair, energy production and yet, we still don’t fully understand a large portion of them.
Researchers call this the dark proteome the proteins whose structures or functions are still unknown. And it turns out, there are a lot of them. Many may be key to how we age, recover, and maintain resilience, but we simply haven’t mapped them yet.
That’s why the Target 2035 initiative is so inspiring. It’s a global effort to develop tools to study every human protein by the year 2035. Imagine what we could learn about cellular repair, longevity, and disease once we have that level of insight.
The dark proteome is a humbling reminder. No matter how far science advances, the body still holds more wisdom than we have language to describe.
And that is what keeps this work endlessly fascinating
