Spotlight on Women’s History in Saint Louis University’s Program in Physical Therapy

Carrie Hall, an alumna of the SLU PT Class of 1983 is a private practice owner in Seattle, WA. She founded Movement Systems Physical Therapy (MSPT) in 1995. She earned her Master's in Health Sciences from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Hall is co-author of the textbook "Therapeutic Exercise: Moving Toward Function" which is in its 4th edition.

When asked of her most valuable lesson learned at Saint Louis University:
"The Jesuit philosophy, and my specific teachers in the Program of Physical Therapy taught me how important it is to be of service to my community and that health care is a right for all human beings."

Movement Systems Physical Therapy is currently seeking a Doctor of Physical Therapy with an option to serve as LEAD in our Seattle location. This person must have a passionate commitment to the profession and a strong desire to promote the value of physical therapist services in our unique model of care. This position is open at our new south Lake Union location, right on the shore of Lake Union with 180 degree views of the Lake.

We advocate a biopsychosocial approach to patient management promoting that movement occurs within a context and pain is an experience that is influenced by thoughts and emotions, as well as the social and physical environment. We believe that developing a therapeutic relationship takes time and consistency in messaging with the DPT as the sole provider. MSPT encourages an eclectic approach to interventions incorporating concepts from various schools of thought, promoting activity, movement, fitness, and wellness as foundations to lasting health. As a Practitioner at MSPT you will provide 60-minute, 1 to 1 sessions with a focus on teaching the patient to manage their care, and promoting self-efficacy. As LEAD, you will be the liaison between the clinical staff, management, Executive team, and Leadership team. You will be clinic LEAD of a growing practice with capacity for 10 FTE's. Ratio of LEAD role to practitioner is 10%.

Highlights of our work environment include:

*Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, & paid time off

*Simple IRA w/ Company Match

*Continuing Education Reimbursement

*Mentoring in the Movement System Impairment Paradigm

*Mentoring and Clinical Instructor Opportunities

*Flexible work schedule

*Inspiring, collaborative, and inclusive environment

Job Type: Full-time

Half a century ago, the Yamasa Clock and Instrument Company in Japan sought to cash in on the buzz left by the 1964 Tokyo Olympics by producing a pedometer they called 'Manpo-kei' – a word that translates into 10,000 steps.

Why 10,000? Good old fashioned marketing. It's a nice, round number that sounds taxing enough to be a goal, but achievable enough to be worth striving for. What it doesn't have going for it is any scientific backing.

Last year, Paluch and her team published research based on a cohort of more than 2,000 middle-aged individuals living across the US. They found taking at least 7,000 steps a day reduced chances of premature death by 50 to 70 percent.

For adults aged 60 and older, this reduced risk topped out at around 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day. Pushing further might have other benefits, but a reduced chance of death isn't one.

Half an hour of intense activity each day could be a big boost for those of us who sit around a lot. Throwing in some strength training in old age could help our brains stay sharp and our hearts and bones stay health and strong. But if nothing else, setting our sights on at least 6,000 to 8,000 paces before bedtime could be a far easier step towards a longer life.

This research was published in The Lancet: Public Health.

Conventional wisdom would have us believe the journey to a long and healthy life begins with 10,000 steps. Each and every day.
