💬 “Helping people reach their goals — that’s what keeps me motivated.”

For Ken Call, PT, DPT and clinic director, some of the most rewarding moments in his career come from seeing patients return to the activities and adventures they love — whether it’s hiking up Badger Mountain or celebrating life milestones with family.

Behind every great patient outcome is a team that never stops learning. Our clinics regularly come together for in-services to collaborate, problem-solve, and exchange best practices. It’s one of the many ways we invest in our clinicians’ continued development and keep our care cutting-edge.

Are you engaging your core correctly?

If you’ve ever been told to “engage your core” but weren’t quite sure what that actually means, this video is for you!

We’re talking about the transverse abdominis—your deepest core muscles. Correct core engagement is key for all functional movement, from lifting groceries to hitting the gym. These stabilizing muscles are the foundation for safe, strong movement.

Learning to activate them properly can help with:
✅ Reducing back pain
✅ Improving posture
✅ Enhancing balance
✅ Boosting performance in everyday tasks

If you’re unsure if you’re activating your core the right way, talk to your physical therapist. We’re here to help you move better, feel stronger, and live pain-free!

Spotlight ⭐️

Team members from around our Portland Metro region spent this year’s PT Day of Service partnering with Go Baby Go, helping build modified ride-on toy cars to give young children with disabilities the gift of mobility and independence.

It was an inspiring day filled with teamwork, creativity, and smiles — all in the spirit of using our skills as physical therapists to make a difference in our community.

👏 Huge thanks to everyone who participated and to for the incredible work they do year-round!

We love when patients share testimonials with us! Here's one by Matthew, a patient who is working with our therapist of the same name!

"I came to TAI shortly after my shoulder surgery in August 2023. I am so appreciative of the staff here. From the moment I'm greeted through finishing my last exercise, everyone is approachable, friendly, and listens to feedback during every session. I made great progress and the team always was able to turn up the intensity as I was able to accept it. As a result, I have full use of my shoulder: pain-free in 3 months! Usually this could take 6 months or longer. They have exceeded my expectations in every way. If you need physical therapy, put tai at the top of your list!"

Thank you, Matthew, for this excellent testimonial, and for being one of our rock starts here at TAI.

Hi-ya, I'm Lila! And yes, I am sitting in a cat tree, is your perch comfortable? Take a moment and find out! Are you hunched over your device with your shoulders rounded and neck bent all funny? Take a moment and stretch it out. It's really important to pay attention to posture or your neck and back will hurt. That being said, it's just as important to change your positioning frequently. Even "good" posture can hurt if you hold it for too long without moving. I personally like to switch between the cat tree, the back of the couch, and my hooman's lap. Keep moving and you get to play more!!

"Hello, hoomans! My name is Aurora. I live with Ruby, one of the exercise specialists, and my sister Lila who will post tomorrow. Happy physical therapy month! I don't know much about PT, but I do know I LOVE playing in the water. Ruby told me a few things about how good therapy in the water is. It reduces the forces acting on your body, so playing in the water is a WOOF-erful choice to build up strength without adding stress to your joints. That means less pain! And we love less pain, cause then we get to play a lot more. It's really important to me that my hoomans stay healthy for a long time cause I need them to keep up with me!

If you're in pain, the hoomans at TAI can help you! Just HOOWWWWWLLL to them and they'll get you all set!"

*Disclaimer: This is Ruby. Please don't howl, just call our office and we'll get you set up with an appointment!

Hi, I'm Charlie the Beardie! The furry pets have had a decent turn, so I'm taking over today's post for the wonderful people at TAI. Let's talk about something I absolutely LOVE- warming up!

I'm cold-blooded, so of course I love a nice heat lamp to jump-start my energy. If I get too cold, I get reaalllyy sleepy and have to take a long nap until I warm up again. I know frigid air isn't the best for my fellow reptiles, and I just found out that humans don't like being too cold either! I've learned that you two-leggers really need to warm up before exercising, or your muscles can get angry and injure themselves in protest. Warming up first improves range of motion which helps to prevent injuries. Apparently, moderate to vigorous physical activity without priming the body first can also place undue stress on the cardiovascular system too.

You can warm up by doing some simple dynamic stretches, a few minutes of walking, or (and this is my personal favorite) sit under a heat lamp! Well, I guess humans are more likely to take a hot bath or shower then sit under a heat lamp, but the principles still apply. If you choose a hot bath or shower to warm up, it's also a great time to practice some mindfulness to connect allow your breathing to connect your mind and body.

Well, that's all I've learned about humans for now. See you next time!
