We agree, own it! One’s beauty does not simply fit into a box. And we know - in this society it’s easier said than done. What’s one small way you can practice this for yourself?

Eating disorders are a symptom of the systems in place within our society that were designed to oppress marginalized people.

Thank you for this nugget of wisdom.

In case no one has told you today, it is more than okay to opt out of diet culture.

Opting out doesn’t mean you will be left behind, we promise. In fact, it might mean you are moving forward.

It has been well established that BMI is not a reliable indicator of health, despite its continued use throughout the medical field.

And while people are beginning to accept that it is not an accurate or effective measure of healthtool, most folks still subscribe to a weight-centric model of health that overly stigmatizes the size and shape of the human body.

At Sunrise Nutrition, we focus on supporting people as they move towards a sustainable and positive relationship with food and movement, independent of body size.

You are worthwhile. You are unique. Diet culture pushes us all to work toward one single standard of beauty, but we want you to know that you are beautiful and worthy, just as you are.

Meet Zahra!

Zahra (she/her) is a Client Care Coordinator and Administrative Assistant here at Sunrise - below is a bit more about her 🍡

“Hello! My name is Zahra Masaoka (she/her). Outside of Sunrise, I teach dance at Westlake Dance Center and am a co-director of Malicious Vixens, an all Asian American women dance collective. I love to be outside, watch tv (anime, k dramas, the office) and eat yummy food with my loved ones.”

Your voice matters. Our culture is very good at highlighting white women struggling with eating disorders, which can be isolating and confusing for those in BIPOC or non-white bodies.

The fact is that all races struggle with eating disorders, and it’s important we keep non-white voices at the forefront of eating disorder treatment and education.

taught us that diet culture teaches us magical thinking, that somehow if we work hard enough we can lose weight; and if we lose weight we can have these incredible lives and everything we want out of life will just be handed to us. This is simply not true. As we move through life, we internalize this message and use it to dictate our day-to-day decisions around food.

What would it be like to challenge this?

Meet Rosanna!

Rosanna is a therapist here at Sunrise - below is a bit more about them 🌱

“Hi! I’m Rosanna Sze (she/they) and I’m a therapist practicing in the state of Washington. My healing approach supports folks in gaining insight and building compassion for the many aspects of their internal existence. I honor the adaptive ways a person has survived stress, trauma and systemic oppression with non-judgment and empathy. I collaborate with those who I work with to support them in establishing belonging in their bodies and aliveness in their values. Additionally, I work with family and support systems in deepening connection, cultivating loving boundaries and practicing relational repair.

I center social justice within my practices and am committed to dismantling and undoing the harms of racial capitalism, gender based violence and diet culture. As a second generation, bilingual Chinese American, I take on a multicultural and intergenerational lens in my healing practice

In my free time, I enjoy cuddles with my pup, adventures around the PNW, cooking and sharing food with loved ones, dabbling in watercolor and photography, and deepening my connection with community.”
