Seattle is set to warm up this Wednesday, with temperatures potentially climbing into the low 80s. However, it’s important to remember that while the air may feel hot, lakes, rivers, and ocean waters often remain dangerously cold. Stay safe around water with these essential tips:

-Wear a life jacket
-Do not consume alcohol and drugs when around water
-Remember that lakes, rivers and the ocean can remain dangerously cold even when the air temperature is warm
-Take extreme caution around rivers. If you do choose to enter a river, always tell someone where you plan to enter and exit before you leave home
-When children are swimming or playing near the water, designate an adult to watch and stay nearby at all times
-Swim at public pools monitored by lifeguards and enroll in swim lessons.

Did you know that more children and teens drown in open water than in pools? A day at the beach or the lake is fun for kids, but open water also has risks, which are different from a swimming pool. Be aware of situations that are unique to open water, such as limited visibility, depth, uneven surfaces, currents and undertow.
