Peony is an acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine practice owned and founded by Paige Barnes in Seattle.

The Latin name “Paeonia,” derives from the name “Paeon.” Paeon was a Greek disciple of Asclepus, the god of medicine. In Traditional Chinese medicine, peony is a foundational herb commonly used to support women’s health and injury due to trauma. Ancient Chinese poets depict peonies as a symbol of honor, abundance, love, affection and feminine beauty.

Here’s a simple warming tea to reduce inflammation, relax the body, and gently move qi ✨🌿

Featuring 佛手 Fó Shǒu — Buddha’s Hand — a beautifully aromatic citrus used in Chinese medicine.

Ingredients:
• 1 “finger” of Buddha’s Hand
• 1 inch fresh ginger, sliced
• 1 inch fresh turmeric, sliced
• 2 cups water
• ½ tbsp honey (or to taste)

Why these herbs?
Buddha’s Hand → moves qi and relieves that feeling of tension or constraint.
Turmeric → supports healthy circulation and helps reduce inflammation.
Ginger → warms digestion and dispels cold.

Add everything except honey to a pot with 2 cups of water.
Simmer 10 minutes.
Let steep 5 more.
Strain, add honey, and sip slowly.

Delightful.

This is the cover of the Winter Deck — created in collaboration with designer Mirte Becker.

With Unshakable Determination, let me guide you into your body’s ocean — the depths of your salty black water, your sea of marrow, your essence, illuminated by the moon.

When I reflect on winter, I envision the bottom of the ocean. The octopus was the perfect creature to appear on the front of the Unshakable Determination winter card deck. The octopus embodies winter’s will. They are steady, adaptive and unwavering. They have nine brains. In Chinese medicine, the brain is called the Sea of Marrow and the kidneys govern the bone and produce marrow. The octopus is a kind of Sea of Marrow floating inside salty black water. They are winter — a deep reserve of will and resilience.

On the cover are three Chinese characters:

志 — Zhì — Will
The spirit of the Kidneys — what my teacher Sabine Wilms translated as unshakable determination.

肾 — Shèn — Kidneys
The root of our body and keeper of essence.

太溪 — Tài Xī — Great Mountain Stream (Kidney 3).
The source point where original Qi flows and reserves are restored.

On the back are five care rituals inspired by Great Mountain Stream — simple practices to nourish your will and replenish your reserves, accessed through QR codes with video and audio guidance.

This is the 5th card of Unshakable Determination, a winter care deck. This practice is an acupressure practice focused on the Gate of Origin — a region of the body beneath your navel, at the base of your pelvis, between your two kidneys. This is the gateway to the source of your kidneys.

At this gate, the practice animates your essence. Your essence is like a deep well of water — a source of nourishment. It is deep and connected to the center of the earth. Its water also reflects the light of the sun — its radiance and power. Your essence is both your emotional depths and your brilliance.

Through daily life, through work, and especially through stress, our kidneys’ qì is taxed. Kidney qì is restored through lifestyle: rest, nutritious food, stillness, receiving therapies, meditation, and simple acts of restoration.

This guided meditation affirms your relationship to your ancestors — and beyond.

In Chinese medicine, winter resonates with the kidneys. The kidneys hold our essence, and our essence is our template of light. It is the original blueprint you arrived with when you were born.

At your first breath, the materials of your family lineage combined with the configuration of the sky to form your template of light.

As we move through life, we can drift from this light. Responsibilities, expectations, noise, and survival can pull us away. We can begin to feel farther from our true nature.

This meditation is an affirmation that you were born on purpose.

That your gifts and talents — your power — are tied to a time before you were born.
They are tied to your ancestors, who stand behind you as you bring your gifts forward.

🕯️ Dedication to Alix Pretti and Renée Good 🕯️

This candle is a dedication to Alix Pretti and Renée Good, to people who died when trying to help others, to people who were killed when standing for humanity.

I want to honor these two people in their courage to stand up for the value of human life.

This violence is very close to home in the United States, and to me personally.
It personalized the violence throughout the United States and internationally, in Palestine, Ukraine, Sudan,
and places that I don’t even know,
and the cruelty to nature and to animals.

When violence comes close, it shakes you to the bone and challenges your perception on what you thought was real.

Sadly and dauntingly, we are living in a time of where just basic human rights
and the understanding of a human,
is fracturing. Humans are being pitted against each other through so much misunderstanding and fear.

We are all human.

I believe in life,
and how we must honor life,
no matter where you are from,
and the color of your skin,
and your economic status,
and your religious beliefs.

It’s so important to return to understanding one another, having compassion for one another.

Taking the time to understand something that you don’t understand is work.

As Toni Morrison says,
to be good is complex,
we have to do the complex work to be good.
