Dr. Dirk Keene and the UW BRaIN lab are part of the Dog Aging Project, a multi-site collaboration studying companion dogs as a social and biological model of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Dr. Keene and DAP collaborators spoke with Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes about the importance and findings of the project, and the impact for both humans and their pets.

The Rowe family dog Ralph was one of many canines with dementia who participated in a study of rapamycin. Scientists were able to gain new insight into the drug's potential as a treatment by studying his brain.

We’re thrilled to launch our website for the New-Hope-TBI program! This new hub unites science and community to accelerate discoveries in traumatic brain injury and build brighter futures filled with hope for survivors and families everywhere.

NEW-HOPE-TBI is dedicated to improving quality of life and health outcomes for patients living with traumatic brain injury, including concussions. We seek to fill critical gaps in the current scientific understanding of the connection between brain injury and Alzheimer's disease and related dementia

Recent story from Allen Institute describing unique BRAIN Map study whose goal is to provide single cell and molecular correlates of normal brain function informed by fMRI at a level of resolution never before achieved.

A collaborative effort between UW and the Allen Institute is creating a first-of-its-kind brain atlas, paving the way for breakthroughs in brain health.

Initially, Lein and Keene planned to recruit volunteers in hospice care. Instead of approaching potential donors directly, which they worried would seem coercive, they asked hospice care workers to share the opportunity with their patients. But no volunteers came forward, says study collaborator Wayne McCormick.

A lack of six new brain donors may stop the project from meeting its goal to pair molecular and cellular data with the functional organization of the cortex.

"Dr. Dirk Keene, a professor and the director of neuropathology at UW Medicine who leads the brain bank, said if federal funding dries up, he’ll go to almost any end to 'honor the gift' of people's donation."

A pause to NIH funding has researchers scrambling for contingency plans at the University of Washington’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. The center’s brain bank is preserving more than 4,000 brains for research.
