March is Lymphedema Awareness Month. It's important to understand the differences between lipedema and lymphedema, as they're often confused but require different care approaches.

Lipedema primarily affects fat distribution, usually in legs and arms, and often runs in families. It typically develops during hormonal changes and causes pain and tenderness.

Lymphedema involves fluid buildup due to lymphatic system damage or blockage. It can affect any body part and often results from surgery, infection, or injury.

Both conditions deserve proper medical attention and specialized treatment. Early diagnosis makes a significant difference in managing symptoms and improving quality of life.

To truly understand lymphedema, we first have to understand the lymphatic system.
Think of the lymphatic system as your body's drainage system. It moves a clear fluid called lymph through a network of vessels and lymph nodes, helping remove waste, toxins, and extra fluid from your tissues, while supporting your immune system.
When this system is damaged or blocked, that fluid has nowhere to go. It builds up, causing swelling, this is lymphedema.
